The Sicily region
Sicily offers to the visitor a unique and unforgettable scenery made of big and small bays, promontories, steep cliffs, coves, sand dunes, granite rocks, wild islands, sun-burned countryside, natural parks and reserves, gorges hollowed by rivers, marine and land grottoes, tuff quarries… The shores and sea of Sicily are astonishing: very fine white sand beaches alternate at red cliffs, white promontories, desert dunes; it is easy to come across old and charming tuna-fisheries or small fisher-men villages surrounded by a blue or emerald green sea. The vegetation in Sicily is amazing: palms, olive trees, vineyards, orange and lemon trees, pine trees, carobs, oleanders and bougainvilleas grow all along the coast, while on mountain slopes and on inaccessible volcanoes are woods of chestnuts, beech, oaks, hazelnuts, fir trees and holm oaks. But Sicily gives you also the opportunity to know its culture and its traditions gathered through centuries of history and under different foreign dominations. Ancient customs, popular feasts, holy processions and gastronomic delights are waiting for you on every corner of the island. You may rediscover its thousands years old history through the architecture of churches, buildings and monuments, through the old arts and crafts and in the various tastes of Sicilian dishes. Wherever you go you will find traces of the island’s glorious past: Palaeolithic grottoes, Roman villas, Greek temples, Benedictine monasteries, Norman towers, Punic ships, Medieval castles, Arab mosques, Baroque churches, Art Nouveau buildings and a warm and a sincere hospitality.
Cefalu area
Cefalů deserves a place of honour among all the towns of the Madonie Moutains, and also compared to the other coastal towns. The reason is that this small town is breathtaking from any side one looks at it: for the beauty of the Rocca, the marvellous position it stands on, for its narrow cobbled roads full of small shops and restaurants, for the amazing beauty of its sea and beaches, but also because it still maintains the old aspect of a small fishermen village. Nowadays, indeed, the little town has changed becoming an elegant and rich tourist resort. The slang of Cefalů’s fishermen helps us to understand the etymology of the word “Cif-alň”, meaning head or “river spring”, which recalls the imposing Rock, which dominates the town, and the head-like shape of the promontory that extends toward the sea. While the name “river spring” is given because of a rich fresh water spring that gushes at sea level. The Arabs, who admired the richness of the waters, the loveliness of the spot and the strength of the fortifications called it “Gafludi”. Besides the various remains found during excavation, which bear evidence of the very ancient origin of this site, the earliest records that identify the town of Cefalů date back from the 4th century, that is during the war between the Carthaginians and the Greeks from Syracuse. Then the town was dominated by the Romans, the Byzantines and in 858 by the Arabs. In 1083 Cefalů was conquered by the Norman Roger I. His son Roger II adopted this town where he begun the erection of the marvellous Cathedral. Subsequently Cefalů was ruled by different noble families, among which were the Chiaramonte and the Ventimiglia, until 1415 when it was declared state town. Between 1500 and 1600 it was fortified with bastions. During the Enlightenment Cefalů offered to Sicily and to the whole world men of great culture, such as Rosario Porpora. The following sentence concentrates the character of Cefalů: “Town of many courtyards where Baroque blends with Renaissance and art itself mingles with everyday life”.

Guestbook
Already we've been home one week. It's grey cold and wet . Blue skies and sea are a distant memory as is your lovely villa. We felt that it had been someone's loved family home. I just wanted to let you know how we appreciated being there and that it will be a lasting memory for us. Jeanette
