The Sicily region

Sicily has been the golden heart of the Mediterranean from early time, many people invaded the island from Phoenician to Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish……leaving behind monuments and treasures to remind us of the past. The diversity can be seen in the different areas the Island of Morzia one of the oldest Phonecian settlements, Segeste, Selinunte, Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and Siracusa with its major Greek influence. In Palermo we have the perfect example of the Norman period with the Monreale cathedral. In the centre one of the most important villas during the Roman period is Roman Casale at Piazza Amerina.

In January, in the deep midwinter the average temperatures on the coast should still be hovering around the 10 deg.C . By February – March the days are starting to get warmer, although conditions in the mountains are still very wintery but along the coast winter is truly over.

April the wild flowers begin to truly explode all over Sicily and on the coast the first bathers start taking to the waters. The interior is spectacular, with the mountain slopes exploding in colour and the temperatures ideal for walking. By May the temperatures on the coast and in the islands will now be extremely comfortable.

June the first feel of summer by July the sea is the focus of the majority of tourist, the temperature is perfectly, at times quite hot.

August is the hottest month, Italian holiday time, people go the coast which become quite crowded.

September: Temperatures remain very comfortable everywhere, and the coast and islands retain that summer feeling, but without the crowds.

October is the most beautiful periods for country walking. Seasonal rainfalls help develop an astonishing variety of mushrooms.

The highest rainfall is generally in the month of November though the big storms that often sweep the Italian peninsula

In December the temperatures are around 10°C still have extremely agreeable temperatures during the days, though the sunlight hours are clearly at their lowest of the year.

The apartment is located in the enchanting village of Sant‘Ambrogio, 5km from the picturesque old fishing town of Cefalú on Sicily’s northern Mediterranean coastline. Sant’Ambrogio is a haven of tranquillity. The village has all you need for everyday life and offers the best of the region’s mountains, sea and culture. Enjoy eating at the family run restaurants in the town’s small piazza and experience the authentic Sicilian way of life.

From Sant’Ambrogio you can easily reach many of the region’s most attractive areas including the beach (100 m), the bustling city of Palermo (40 minutes by car), the spectacular Aeolian Islands (2 hours by boat) and the Park of the Madonie Mountains. You can explore the ancient fortresses or enjoy a show in the open air amphitheatre in the authentic hill top village of Pollina 700m above sea level. Or just relax and soak up the character of this lovely Sicilian village.

"Fantastic stay in fantastic apartment!"

Our 2 week stay at Casa Melinda was fantastic. Toto and Melinda were wonderful hosts and the village of Sant'Ambrogio is a very friendly place to stay. The apartment was well equipped, extremely clean, and nothing was a problem for our hosts, even accessing the vegetable garden of Toto! The apartment has everything you could ask for, with some sea views , and a wonderful garden area that was so cool during the hot July afternoons. We were very sad to leave! The village has a very warm friendly atmosphere , and it was great to stay in a small village where you feel that you can get to know some of the locals!

"Jewel in Cefalu"

Casa Melinda in St Ambrogio, 4 km east of Cefalu, was a great apartment and experience. One of the best we have had after 12 months traveling Italy; the apartment was spotless, the garden delightful, the hosts warm and welcoming (good English) and excellent facilities. The "information book" provided us with more opportunities than we had time for. St Ambrogio was a haven just 5 mins from Cefalu. Strongly recommend this apartment and this area of Bella Sicilia.
