The Sicily region

Cefalu

Marcopolo is ideal for an economically convenient and relaxing vacation. However, it also offers the possibility to quickly reach the most popular places in the Madonie.

The MADONIE REGIONAL NATURAL PARK (Italian: 'Parco delle Madonie') is an Italian regional park located in Sicily, between Palermo and Cefalù and covers 39,972 acres. It includes the Madonie mountain range and some of the highest mountains in Sicily. The park has six mountains that are over 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) and many more that are over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft). The highest is Pizzo Carbonara at 1,979 metres (6,493 ft), second in height only to Mount Etna.

As well as being a nature reserve, the park is an inhabited area with dozens of little villages and small towns many of which trace their origins to medieval times. The park is also home to a number of castles and numerous ancient churches. The wild mountainous slopes are inhabited by wolves, wildcats and eagles as well as being a habitat to the rare, nearly-extinct Nebrodi fir tree.

For the sea's lovers, only by driving a few km, it is possible to reach Cefalù, Marina di Tusa and Santo Stefano di Camastra. On the other hand, for the countryside and mountains' lovers it is also possible to quickly reach Pollina, Castelbuono, Castel di Tusa and San Mauro Castelverde.

In particular CEFALU' is a city and comune in the province of Palermo, located on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea about 70 km east from the provincial capital and 185 km west of Messina. The town, with its population of just under 14,000, is one of the major tourist attractions in the region. Despite its size, every year it attracts millions of tourists from all parts of Sicily and also, from all over Italy and Europe. In summer the population can triple, making the main streets and major roads in the country crowded. There is then a youthful atmosphere and a lively nightlife.

The main sight is the Cathedral, begun in 1131, in a style of Norman architecture which would be more accurately called Sicilian Romanesque. The exterior is well preserved, and is largely decorated with interlacing pointed arches; the windows also are pointed. On each side of the façade is a massive tower of four storeys. The round-headed Norman portal is worthy of note. A semi-circular apse is set into the east end wall. Its strengthening counterforts that work like buttresses, are shaped as paired columns to lighten their aspect. The groined vaulting of the roof is visible in the choir and the right transept, while the rest of the church has a wooden roof. Fine cloisters, coeval with the cathedral, adjoin it.

Two strong matching towers flank the cathedral porch, which has three arches (rebuilt around 1400) corresponding to the nave and the two aisles.

Christus Pantokrator in the apsis of the cathedral

Church of St. Stefano.

Cefalu in 1830, by Carl Anton Joseph Rottmann.

The interior of the cathedral was restored in 1559, though the pointed arches of the nave, borne by ancient granite columns, are still visible; and the only mosaics preserved are those of the apse and the last bay of the choir; they are remarkably fine specimens of the Byzantine art of the period (1148) and, though restored in 1859-1862, have suffered much less than those at Palermo and Monreale from the process. The figure of the Pantocrator gracing the apse is especially noteworthy.

Another place to visit is CASTELBUONO a town and comune in the province of Palermo, Sicily especially famous for the castle which its name derives, and around which the city grew up in the 14th century. The construction of the Castle began in 1316, by order of Count Francesco I of Ventimiglia, over the ruins of the ancient Byzantine town of Ypsigro, high on the San Pietro hill. Hence its original name, Castello del buon aere ("Castle of good air"), from which the name Castelbuono is derived - literally meaning "good castle".

Numerous drastic alterations were made in the 17th century for reasons of accommodation, when a number of Ventimiglia families moved here from Palermo - the castle never served any really strategic purpose, owing to its geographic position down valley. The construction presents Arab-Norman and Swabian features: the cube shape recalls Arabic architecture; the square towers, although incorporated into those of the façade, reflect Norman architectural style, as also the battlements; and the round tower recalls aspects of Swabian architecture.

The city is home to one of Europe's oldest road running competitions: the Giro Podistico Internazionale Castelbuono was first held in the city in 1912 and is held annually.

In the end POLLINA is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Palermo located about 70 km east of Palermo. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 3,102 and an area of 49.9 km².Pollina probably occupies the site of the ancient city of Apollonia.

The municipality of Pollina contains the frazione (subdivision) Finale di Pollina.

Pollina borders the following municipalities: Castelbuono, Cefalù, San Mauro Castelverde.

In particular FINALE DI POLLINA is a small coastal village situated below the town of Pollina that is the municipality to which it belongs. The village is inhabited the entire year and, in this way, it is possible to find a supermarket, a grocery shop, a greengrocer, a bakery, a butcher, a pizzeria, different restaurants and several bars.
