The Sicily region

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, famous for its breathtaking scenery, wonderful locally produced food and its incredibly friendly people. In the east towers Etna, standing at 3,320m (10,900ft) high, it’s one of the world's tallest and most active volcanoes. The beautiful Aeolian Islands are to the north and are reachable by boats which leave the small port of Cefalu daily during the summer season.
Sicily has just been voted favourite holiday island 2009 by readers of Conde Nast, scoring huge marks for its weather, food and the friendly reception from your Sicilian hosts.
Sicily is a truly year round holiday destination. If you are a beach lover then the long summer season will be ideal for you. If mountain excursions, walks or cycling trips are more your thing, then the warm sunny spring and autumn seasons will be the ideal time. Winter sports enthusiasts can ski on the slopes of both Etna and Piano Battaglia (nr Cefalu), in the winter months from December to February.
The Cefalu / Sant' Ambrogio area
The beautiful town of Sant'Ambrogio sits just a few hundred metres from Sicily’s northern coast and just a few minutes’ drive from the bustling fishing port and popular tourist hotspot of Cefalu. A perfect spot to enjoy some authentic Sicilian hospitality from the family run restaurants near the small piazza. The small beach is only a few minutes’ walk from the village and during high season is less crowded than the hugely popular beach in Cefalu.
Cefalu is less than an hour’s drive along the coast, east of Sicily’s capital Palermo. It has long been one of Sicily’s most beautiful and popular resorts. Walking through the historic centre of the town you will discover charming cobbled streets lined with interesting local shops and excellent restaurants. At its heart, in the town’s main square, stands the imposing Norman cathedral built in 1132 by King Roger 2nd. The huge image of Christ Pantocrator in the cathedral’s apse is remarkable. Close-by, the long stretch of sandy beach is popular with both locals and tourists, and as the sun sets over the sea, the promenade comes alive for the evening passegiata. Cefalu is not just a seaside resort, but also makes a convenient base from which to explore the interior of the island. A short drive away is the Madonie National Park, with its breathtaking mountain landscapes and picturesque hill-top villages, perfect for walking and cycling, and even for skiing in the winter months.

We had a superb week in Villa Mara at the very beginning of April. The villa overlooks the sea. Its views are stunning and it is set in the rocky hillside overlooking the sea. It is on 2 different levels (the top level having 2 storeys) and then beneath the level with the pool (the bottom level) the garden continues down the hill in fairly steep terraces. We travelled with 2 children (nearly 3 and nearly 5) who are sure footed with a good ratio of adult per child (3 adults) and the garden and villa really captivated the children's and our imagination - they loved playing in it but perhaps if you had a crawler or younger child it would be less relaxing (although each level outdoors was gated so this wouldn't necessarily be a problem). For us, it was absolutely perfect. The children enjoyed picking lemons from the lemon tree whenever we needed one for drinks etc! They loved the pool and the decking next to it made it a safe area to play around. They enjoyed playing up and down the steps and making dens in different places. There were all sorts of interesting plants and many different things to look at. We were met and helped out by Giuseppe, who was very kind and welcoming and answered all our questions. The children adored him and were very excited whenever they saw him and we also liked him a lot. The views were beautiful and everything was clean. The beds were comfortable. San Ambrogio is a friendly village with a pizzeria and very close to the much busier but also lovely town of Cefalu. The time of year we travelled to Sicily was lovely - lots of flowers in blossom and enough of a buzz around Cefalu to make it fun but not so heaving with people that we couldn't park etc. We found it warm during the day (T-shirts and shorts, fine for playing on the beach and in the sea) but needed jumpers in the evening. The pool wasn't warm because of the time of year but we used it a few times for short periods of time and it was good fun and, like everything else, beautifully maintained and clean. I would recommend this property rental very highly. |

We had the most relaxing, thrilling and genuine vacation experience imaginable. The house, its pool and its beautiful setting is a paradise in itself and Giuseppe took care of us in a wonderful and most hospitable way. Sant' Ambroggio's inhabitants welcomed us in every way and we felt very much as part of the village life for a week. We would return tomorrow if we could! |

Sant' Ambrogio is an unspoilt village built into the hillside overlooking the sea, about 6km from the bustling town of Cefalu (5-10 mins drive along the coast road). The village has a pizzeria, a bar, coffee bar and convenience store. Villa Mara occupies a prime position overlooking the Mediterranean, a lovely swimming pool and terraces. The villa itself is well appointed and equipped. It is looked after by Guiseppe who lives in the village and is always at hand if you need any assistance. He is very friendly and informative and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed in late May with our two daughters (21 and 23) and had a lovely holiday. |

April 2011
This is a beautiful and well equipped house with a stunning view. The local agent Guiseppe is wonderful and will stop at nothing to be of help. He makes sure there is a welcoming bowl of fruit, wine and other goodies in the fridge and comes every day early in the morning to clean the outside pool area. It would be helpful to have a folder in the house regarding the local area---transport, sites of interest, restaurants etc but this is a small criticism.

The property is in a beautiful spot overlooking the sea and a garden that tumbles down a steep hillside... It is in a quiet corner of a small village. The kitchen opens on to a spacious terrace with a large table and sun umbrellas. It was a fabulous place to prepare and enjoy breakfast.
Perhaps the best part of it all was the way we were looked after throughout the time we were there. Giuseppe, who lives around the corner, has the job of caring for the property and is incredibly friendly and helpful.
This was an outstanding holiday experience.

I have to say your villa was simply spectacular in every way. My family and I had a great time. The location and the service we received was hard to beat and Giuseppe was excellent in taking care of us.

We had a wonderful time at Villa Mara. It is a lovely, clean and well-furnished property in a beautiful location. However what made the holiday special for us was Joe’s <our onsite manager> helpful and friendly assistance. He couldn’t do enough to help and made us feel very welcome.
Petra S - April 2009
Have used many agents before – your help and flexibility prior too, during and at the end of the holiday was outstanding and made the whole experience hassle free. 5 out of 5.
