The Dubrovnik Riviera/Islands region

Embodied with its unique history, culture and architecture, Dubrovnik has been called the "Adriatic pearl" for centuries.

The city is rich with museums, collections and historical monuments defying to the teeth of time and always succeeds to charm its visitors. Filled with old stone houses, every one of them with its own original story, it will amaze You once and for all. History of Dubrovnik starts in the seventh century with little town Epidaurum, today known as Cavtat.

After collapse of West Roman empire, running away from Avars and Slavs, people of Epidaurum founded colony Called Laus-Lave-Ragusa.

Thirteen century saw the rise of the Dubrovnik Republic, independent and strong through history until 1808, when it was finally defeated by Napoleon.

Extending its territory to Lastovo, Peljesac and Konavle, with very strong navy, diplomatic skills and market and trade background, it became of the European centres of science and arts. 15th and 16th century were the golden age of the Republic, when pragmatic politics and good relationships with Spain, Turkey and Vatican kept Dubrovnik Republic free from wars.

Catastrophic earthquake of 1667 marked the beginning of its gradual fall. It managed to renew economy and navy, but in 1808 was occupied by France, after which it became a part of Croatia. It was a pretty much destroyed in Serbs-Montenegrin aggression in 19991-1992. After the war Dubrovnik is renovating again and experiencing its total blossom.

Cavtat area

Major tourist attractions include a very pleasant climate, luxuriant vegetation and nice shores.
Economy is based on tourism, while chief occupations in the surroundings of Cavtat include farming and fishing.
The port is enclosed by two peninsulas: the south-western Sustjepan separates it from the channel, which is enclosed by the Cavtat reefs of Bobara and Mrkan. East of the Rat peninsula is the Tiha bay. Nice beaches stretch all the way to Cape Prahljevac. Cavtat is located on the main road (M2, E65). It is very well connected with major Croatian cities through Dubrovnik Airport, while local communications with the surroundings include ship and bus lines.

Sea divers are especially interested in amphorae sites. In the vicinity of Cavtat at a depth of 25 to 32 metres, there exists a submarine museum containing 1,600 amphorae, unique in the world! It was there that an ancient ship sank in the 4th century B.C. The amphorae lie in the muddy depths, arranged in layers, just as they were shipped. The remainder of the ship is invisible; however, the greater part of the amphorae, which contained oil and wine were destined for Venice, is well preserved.
At a depth of 30 metres, there are also vessels-enormous ceramic containers that in ancient times were built into the ships. They date from the 1st century B.C., constituting one of the rare vessels sites in the Mediterranean.
