After collapse of West Roman empire, running away from Avars and Slavs, people of Epidaurum founded colony Called Laus-Lave-Ragusa.

Thirteen century saw the rise of the Dubrovnik Republic, independent and strong through history until 1808, when it was finally defeated by Napoleon.
Extending its territory to Lastovo, Peljesac and Konavle, with very strong navy, diplomatic skills and market and trade background, it became of the European centres of science and arts. 15th and 16th century were the golden age of the Republic, when pragmatic politics and good relationships with Spain, Turkey and Vatican kept Dubrovnik Republic free from wars.


Catastrophic earthquake of 1667 marked the beginning of its gradual fall. It managed to renew economy and navy, but in 1808 was occupied by France, after which it became a part of Croatia. It was a pretty much destroyed in Serbs-Montenegrin aggression in 19991-1992. After the war Dubrovnik is renovating again and experiencing its total blossom.

Cavtat is situated 18 km from Dubrovnik. It is rich with museums, collections and historical monuments defying to the teeth of time and always succeeds to charm its visitors.

Cavtat area

Cavtat today is a little tourist town full of cultural and historical monuments. Its breathtaking Mediterranean beauty makes it a must for every visitor of Dubrovnik. Resplendent in its charm and character, it was a cradle and a sanctuary for a number of distinctive Renaissance poets. Filled with Pre-Christian monuments, mostly of Roman origin, it is well known as a town that gave birth to a great jurist, scientist and cosmopolitan Baldo Bogisic, painter Vlaho Bukovac, and a politician and a publicist Frano Supilo.
The town has numerous hotels, among them one of the most beautiful hotels in our country - Hotel "Croatia", with private hotel beaches and a number of public beaches wonderfully created by the nature itself.
The old port of Cavtat is situated in a protected bay and has a mix of ancient culture and modern hotels; IBEROSTAR Hotel Albatros, Hotel Epidaurus, Hotel Cavtat, Hotel Croatia, Hotel Villa Pattiera....Cavtat is close to Dubrovnik airport ( 5 km) and Dubrovnik town, and it is served by a local bus and boat service.

How to get there

Cavtat is a small coastal town located 20 kilometers southeast of the Dubrovnik city and 5 kilometers from Dubrovnik Airport. The easiest way to reach Cavtat is by air. Dubrovnik has an international airport, which provides direct or indirect connections via Zagreb to many European cities. Many low coast companies like Sky Europe, WizzAir, Norwegian.no etc. landing at Dubrovnik Airport .

Little Mediterranean & Croatian town Cavtat is a nice starting point if you wish to visit magnificent Dubrovnik old town and also want a retreat from the bustle in Dubrovnik.You will be very close to Dubrovnik and also still be able to visit it as often as you like (by own car or car rental, by bus or by boat). A regular bus and boat services operated between Cavtat, Plat, Milini and Dubrovnik every half on hour!

From Dubrovnik airport there are always local taxis available and the fare should be no more than 20 EUR. There are also car-ferry connections with Rijeka, Split and the Italian coast. If you decide to come by car in Cavtat you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Croatian scenery along the way.

Sea divers are especially interested in amphorae sites. In the vicinity of Cavtat at a depth of 25 to 32 meters, there exists a submarine museum containing 1,600 amphorae, unique in the world! It was there that an ancient ship sank in the 4th century B.C. The amphorae lie in the muddy depths, arranged in layers, just as they were shipped. The remainder of the ship is invisible; however, the greater part of the amphorae, which contained oil and wine were destined for Venice, is well preserved.
At a depth of 30 meters, there are also vessels-enormous ceramic containers that in ancient times were built into the ships. They date from the 1st century B.C., constituting one of the rare vessels sites in the Mediterranean.
