The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
Cavalaire is on the western part of the Cote d'Azur, in the Var Department, and near to the famous resort of St Tropez. The coast is mountainous, interspersed wtih gaps where river valleys come out to the sea. The departmental capital is Toulon to the west, a naval base, and to the east the city of Nice is the largest resort on this coast. Inland the country gradually becomes wilder, with rock and scrub and gorges. leading up to the high Alps.
The coast is generally mild being south-facing and shielded by mountains from the north wind. In the winter nights can be coldish, but the sun is warm during the day with temperatures up to 22 degrees C. Summers are hot but this is usually tempered by the breeze off the sea. Spring and autumn are pleasant. There is little rain, mostly in the spring and autumn, and there may be autumn storms.
Cavalaire area
Cavalaire is a thriving resort nestling at the base of the Maure mountains. 100 years ago it was just a small fishing village. The resident population of about 5,000 is greatly enhanced in the summer season, but there are visitors all year round. The long beach faces southeast and is protected from the westerly winds by the rocky headland.
In the town centre and around the harbour are shops meeting all needs. There is a large Champion supermarket, also 2 smaller supermarkets and two bakers. A large open-air market each Wednesday morning sells produce, clothes, household goods, jewellery and many other items. A map will be supplied for visitors showing location of the most useful shops.
The fishing port is now a large marina, but there is still commercial fishing and fresh fish can be purchased on the quay each morning from 10 am. There are many restaurants and bars around the harbour, some of which remain open all year round. Apart from boating, the port provides for Scuba diving in season.
From the harbour the beach stretches about 2 miles northeast and there are more shops and restaurants at La Douane where the road turns inland to Croix-Valmer. The main beaches are protected by lifegaurds in the high season.
West of Cavalaire the coast road is the Corniche des Maures with smaller communities on hillsides in rocky bays with some beaches. The next bay west is Le Rayol-Canadol. Here the extensive gardens of Rayol are arranged on the hillside down to the sea in areas displaying plants and flowers from around the world (entrance charge). At the end of the Corniche the town of Le Lavandou is a large resort with marina based around an attractive old town. Further east still is the town of Hyeres, with an old centre. The salt pans of Presquier nearby have abundant bird life, and lead to the Giens peninsula.
East from Cavalaire the main road crosses the St Tropex peninsula to the modern villages of Port Grimaud and Port Cogolin built around waterways. Nearby there is a Hypermarket at the roundabout where the road goes off to St Tropex. St Tropez can be crowded in summer but the old town and port are charming and overlooked by a fort with a museum. On the St Tropez peninsula are more beaches, and the hilltop villages of Ramatuelle and Gassin, the former surrounded by a complete wall. Many wine growers on the peninsula sell their produce on site.
Further east is the sophisticated resort of St Raphael, linked with Frejus, which has remains of the former Roman city. Further east still, but within a days outing by car, is the dramatic Corniche of the Esterel mountains, and beyond that Cannes and Nice. Nice is the 5th largest city in France but has a charming old town and much more.
Inland from Cavalaire the Maure mountains are covered in forests of pine, sweet chestnut and cork oak. The towns of Collobrieres, Grimaud and La Garde Freinet are worth a visit, as is the ruined abbey of Chartreuse de la Verne.
The Hyere islands lie off the coast. The largest and most western, Porquerolles, is most easily reached from the Giens peninsula. The other two, Port Cros and the Isle de Levant, lie south of Le lavandou, with regular boat services from there, but there are also summer services direct from Cavalaire. Porquerolles and Port Cros are wooded and the latter is hilly; both have good walks.
