The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region
The Pyrenees mountain range is one of France’s best kept secrets. According to many people, the Pyrenees boasts some of the country’s most breathtaking views, finest walks and treks and a less crowded more chilled out skiing experience than the well known Alps.
The Pyrenees, approximately 435km long and 50km broad at the widest points as well as over 3,200m in height spans France, Spain and Andorra. There is something to please everybody here from the stylish sun-drenched beaches of the Atlantic coast such as Biarritz to the lush meadowland and forests, snowclad peaks, deep canyons and stunning high altitude lakes of the Haute Pyrenees.
The famous religious town of Lourdes is 30km north of Cauterets.
Cauterets area
Cauterets situated at 950m, is a picturesque spa town and all year round mountain sports playground in the French Pyrenees. In summer, the town is the ultimate haven for walkers, climbers and cyclists with more than 100 marked footpaths & tracks plus miles of unmarked routes. In winter it is an authentic Pyrenean ski resort enjoying the best snowfall in the whole of the Pyrenees with a new high speed 8 man telecabine up to the ski station starting at an impressive 1850m for some great skiing/snowboarding for all abilities. Only 7km away by car or bus is the breathtaking Pont D'Espagne (National Park) with lush forests & valleys. In summer enjoy walks for all ages/abilities or pack your rucksack and go trekking, visiting one of the many mountain refuges. In winter it is a magical winter wonderland with over 36km of cross country ski runs, snowshoe/walking tracks, plus toboggan slope.
Cauterets is surrounded by stunning countryside featuring breathtaking waterfalls and hot water springs. The thermal spas, famous for their special healing powers, have helped to ensure Cauterets’ popularity as a holiday destination over the last two hundred years. When it comes to eating out, there is a large choice of good value restaurants on offer (2 min walk), from authentic French cuisine (mouthwatering steaks, confit de canard, hearty ‘garbure’meat and vegetable soup), to pizzas and pastas, creperies, raclettes and fondues. You can also enjoy the many bars, shops and markets and try your luck in the casino. With additional facilities including; a swimming pool, ice rink, mini golf, games studio for all ages, tennis courts, skateboarding park, two boules pitches, a beautifully restored Victorian merry go round and two parks for kids, Cauterets has lots on offer to keep everybody of all ages entertained. Please google 'Mulcares' for further information.
