The Midi-Pyrenees / Hautes-Pyrenees region
The Hautes Pyrenees, or the Bigorre as it is known locally, is the highest section/department of the Pyrenees mountain chain which forms a natural border between France and Spain and stretches all the way from the more arid Mediterranean side to the lush green Atlantic side with its glorious sandy beaches of Biarritz, Hossegor and beyond.
The mountain peaks rise to over 3000m and include one of the best known Pic du Midi de Bigorre and the Cirque de Gavarnie, a natural amphitheatre with Europe's highest waterfall. The natural assets are protected by the Parc National des Pyrenees. It is an area of varied and breathtaking natural beauty offering a great choice of outdoor activities.
Although the peaks are not as high as the Alps, there are Pyrenean valleys at a higher altitude and an abundance of high altitude mountain lakes and refuges to discover.
Come and discover the flora and fauna. From the orchids to the edelweiss, there are over 150 species endemic to the Pyrenees. The fauna includes the desman, izards, marmots, eagles, vultures and, most famously, the Pyrenean brown bear.
The famous religious town of Lourdes is 30km north of Cauterets and numerous other small ski stations are within an hours drive of Cauterets.
Cauterets area
Cauterets is a fantastic place to stay - Winter or Summer. It is blessed with the best snow fall in the French Pyrenees and has both an alpine ski station and a fantastic cross country set up at the Pont D'Espagne.
In the Summer it becomes a walkers paradise, combined with some fantastic mountain biking, climbing, parascending and even ice climbing on the glacier of Vignemale, the highest mountain in the French Pyrenees.
The town itself has natural thermal spas, an ice skating rink, casino, amusement arcade, public heated swimming pool (open all year with indoor and outdoor pools) and a whole host of businesses running just about every mountain based activity that you can think of. The town is also blessed with an abundance of bars, restaurants, shops and markets. So whether you want to eat out all the time or cater for yourself in our fantastic fully fitted kitchen - the choice is yours!
Additional things to do include mini golf, tennis courts, skateboarding park, two boules pitches, a beautifully restored Victorian merry go round and two play parks for kids, Cauterets has lots on offer to keep everybody of all ages entertained.
How to get there
Cauterets is within easy reach of the UK and Ireland with great flights provided by many of the budget airlines into Biarritz, Pau, Bordeaux, Toulouse or Bilbao. Ryan Air, Easy Jet, BMi, British Airways and FlyBe are the main carriers. Best flights are into Pau and Biarritz with Ryan Air or EasyJet, followed by a 1 hour car ride from Pau and 2 hours from Biarritz.
Car hire is through the usual agents with plenty of choice at all airports, ferry ports and train stations.
For those that don't like to fly you can get the Eurostar to France and then TGV down to Dax and then to Lourdes. Or there is the 24 ferry crossing into Spain - into Bilbao/ Santander.

Guestbook for The Continental
Dear Ben, Amy and Jacques,
Thanks for the message - Also a huge Thank You for all the help that you gave us. We had a really lovely time and the children are now very keen to ski again. Toby and Megan were the surprise speed demons - Tess and I could only shut our eyes in horror, but they were surprisingly controlled with it and we suffered no major incidents. Bella and Ellen were more cautious, but loved it too. The creche was great - maybe I should have put Hugo in there a bit longer, but he was loving the snow and skiing between our legs and wants go to the mountains again.
Kind regards, Mandy Beker and family
