The Languedoc-Roussillon region

This is open countryside of vineyards, mountains, lakes .One of least touristy in France. Full of medieval architecture dating from the time of the "heretical" Cathar sect , including castles and fortified villages. Carcassonne is an official UNESCO World Heritage site; and so is the Canal du Midi, a masterpiece of 18th century engineering which links the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.

The Canal is an ideal spot to walk or cycle alongside and the local fresh food markets are splendid.Across these mountains is Albi, another impressive medieval city which was also the home of Toulouse Lautrec, and houses a museum in his memory.

It's an hour's drive to the Mediterranean, past small villages where there are many opportunities to taste and buy the local wine. The climate here is typically Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and mild winters.

Caunes-Minervois

Caunes-Minervois is an ancient village, at the foot of the Montagne Noire. It is famous for its 8th century abbey and Cathar history There are walks in the Black Mountains behind the village and through the vineyards in front of the village, perfect for cycling, too. Caunes-Minervois is a peaceful patchwork of cobbled streets and medieval alleys.

Five restaurants add to the charm . There is golf, riding, kayaking and climbing nearby and a classical music festival each summer. .
