The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

There are really so many things to do here its quite difficult to know where to start.
The medieval Cité of Carcassonne is a must as it's so spectacular although the Saturday morning market in the 'new' (17th century!) town is full of life. Local produce is displayed to perfection with stall-holders competing good-naturedly for trade with each other and bantering with locals and visitors alike. Sit in one of the surrounding cafés and relax and take in the atmosphere.
The spectacular ruined hilltop Cathar castles, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Montsegur in the foothills of the Pyrenees (1-2hrs.) are there to be explored by car or on foot, as is Rennes le Chateau , the mystic presumed resting place of the Cathar treasure.
The Mediterranean coast is reachable in about 50mins at Narbonne. The beaches all along this coast are long, clean and for the most part gently shelving, making them ideal for families. There are “etangs” all along the coast where you will find flamingos, wading birds and oyster beds.
Sports are many and varied so if you have anything particular in mind just drop me a line....
The Caunes-Minervois area
Caunes-Minervois is famous throughout France for its pink marble which has been used in some of the grandest buildings of Europe such as the Palace of Versailles and the Vatican. It also has an abbey and along with the monastery buildings and ramparts which have been preserved in large part as have the magnificent Renaissance and Gothic merchants houses which bear witness to its prosperity.
There is still a feeling of prosperity with its soon to be sixth restaurant opening this summer. Jazz concerts are staged in the abbey right through the year and wine tasting events take place weekly in the summer.
Caunes is right in the midst of wine country being in the Haut Minervois region which produces some spectacularly good wines. We have many friends among the vignerons of Aude so if this is an interest of yours let us know and we could suggest places to go and wine caves to visit.

The house was perfect for a week away with friends for a wedding. It was bright, clean and spacious. The only problem we had is that the wifi did not work. Every time we called the emergency number for the owners, they didn't answer (hardly an emergency number) and only called me back once but did not leave a message. This was a problem for one of my mates as he had work to do whilst we were away. Apart from this problem, I would definitely use this house again. |
