Three bedrooms, one bathroom, stone house in a small but lively medieval French village located in the heart of the Minervois, famous for its history and great wines. Caunes boasts of a fine church and abbey that date to 800AD and is part of the rich Cathre history of the area. The Abby also serves as a back drop for summer concerts with a dinner served before under the ancient grape arbor. Once you arrive in Caunes you can easily leave your car parked, since there is a cafe, hotel, restaurants, butcher, 2 bakers, and a small food store in the village. If you want to go exploring, marvelous scenic hiking trails await you, or a hop back in your car for a day of exploring in an area rich in history.

20 minutes from Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi, Caunes is nestled in the foothills of the Mountain Noire with vineyards stretching out before it. The Minervois is a premiere wine growing region in the Languedoc and there are dozens of wine makers anxious for you to taste their wine; there are dozens of very fine restaurants to tempt your palette and accompany a fine local wine.

Caunes is 45 minutes from Mediterranean beaches, three hours from Barcelona, and literally minutes from many of the Cathre Castles.

Our house has a small patio and garden, and a lovely roof terrace, both with views of the surrounding countryside, and on a clear day, a view of the Pyrenees. It has three bedrooms but only one bathroom. It has a nice size living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor, the double bedrooms and bathroom are on the second floor with access to the garden terrace. And a comfortable spiral staircase leading up to the upper terrace with breathtaking views. A perfect setting for a glass of wine and a delicious meal.

The prominent village of Caunes Minervois is located in the Minervois, an important wine growing area situated East of Carcassonne, West of Beziers and North of Narbonne.

Caunes Minervois is a pretty medieval village nestled in the foothills of the Mountain Noire, dotted with beautiful vineyards and olive groves stretching out before us as far as the eyes can see. Caunes is lively with many cultural events throughout the year. We have several little restaurants, 2 bakeries, a butcher, 2 small grocery markets, and a great cafe' for enjoying a morning coffee or a drink in the afternoon while watching people, dogs and cats.

Caunes boasts of a beautiful Abby which was built around 800AD; the entire area is steeped in history. There is an interesting historical self guided tour through the village explaining important Medivial buildings. This area of France, from Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea, is known as the Pay du Cathare. Dozens of medieval pittouresque castles are located around the area and they are fun and interesting to visit.

We are only 20 minutes from the Canal du Midi which was built in the 1500's, connecting the Atlantic Ocean near Bordeaux with the Mediterranean Sea in Sete. Boat rentals on the canal are easily arranged. There is also a path on both sides of the canal which is ideal for walking, jogging, or biking. The canal passes through several interesting cities and dozens of small villages, where you will find wine-tasting, B&B's, restaurants serving regional specialties.

The Mediterranean Sea, and its beautiful beaches, are only 1 hour away, the Spanish border is 2 hours away. But there are ample reasons to stay in Caunes, no least of which are the fine and numerous local vineyards, cultural activities, and wonderful opportunities to hike and explore the local hills and vineyards.
