Southern Italy region
Always popular with Italian holidaymakers, Calabria is the southern most region of Italy, the foot of the Italian “Boot” a rugged peninsula, with coastline on three sides, where fig and olive trees cling to mountainsides, stretching down to the miles of beautiful sandy beaches, and rocky coves, a remarkable region of beauty.
Now being “discovered” by the rest of us, tourism is increasingly becoming the future for Calabria, with holiday resorts growing up on the extensive Tyrrhenian and Ionian coastline. Calabria has not only beautiful beaches and mountains but also national parks, one being the famous Sila, which is so high you can even ski in the winter!! A more southerly resport is Gambarie in Aspromonte, a small ski resort with 5 pistes – 4 ski lifts, boasting a very impressive 670 metres of vertical decent.
Calabria has something for everyone, from beautiful long white beaches, to energetic pursuits, mountain walks, horse riding, swimming, water parks, snorkelling, scuba diving sites, many shipwrecks sited offshore can be visited with a guide from diving clubs in the area, there are 14 diving centres around the coast, nearest to Caulonia is at Marina di Gioiosa.
The villages have a distinct flavour of Greece, with whitewashed walls and a cuisine that owes much to those ancient invaders from across the Ionian Seas. The food and wine is some of the best quality in the world.
Calabrian Towns - Cosenza - one of the big towns, with a pretty and charming old quarter, and handy for the nearby Sila mountains, with their walking and winter sports.
The largest town in Calabria, Reggio di Calabria , with its pretty seafront and promenade, lies on the very toe of Italy, facing Sicily
Festivals - Calabria's traditional festivals have religious origins. Given its Ancient Greek and Roman origins, also Norman and Byzantine, French and Spanish, the events combine orthodox and ethnic rituals creating a dramatic colorful, festive and atmosphere.
Also Gastronomic/sagre festivals, depending on certain crop’s or farming during the year. In January, when pigs are slaughtered, a "La Sagra di Maiale", Pork Feast, is held in the towns, where the food is prepared in the squares by families, and the entire population spend three days feasting together.
There are many ancient Greek and Roman remains, Roman sites and museums one beside the sea at Monasterace and the magnificent statues found on the sea bed at nearby Riace can be seen in their full glory in the Museum at Reggio Calabria. Particularly worth visiting is Gerace, a small historical town, founded in the 9th century by Greek refugees.
Also Norman-Aragonese castle: Byzantine-Norman cathedral of the assumption: Church of S. Francesco: Church of S. Giovanello: which dates back to the 8th century.
The ancient town of Locri, founded by the Greeks in the 7th century BC contains the remains of walls and fortification as well as the various temples of Masara, Athena Promachos, Pan and Persephone; the Greek-Roman theatre and the Necropolis. There are centuries of history and culture side by side with modern Italian stylish living.
