The North East Brazil / Pernambuco region
Pernambuco is one of the most beautiful states in the Northeast of Brazil, with a fascinating history and a vibrant culture. The coastline around Catuama has been inhabited by Indians for milenia, and was fought over by the Dutch and the Portuguese in the 17th century.

Further up the coast is the beautiful Tambaba beach, the only naturist beach in the Northeast of Brazil Catuama is 8 degrees south of the equator, with a very stable and comfortable climate. Summer (September -April) is dry with wind from the NE and temperatures reaching 32C, with a constant breeze. Winter (May-August) is the wet season, with a prevailing SE wind and temperatures between 24-28° C.

Catuama area
Catuama is a fishing village 75 km north of Recife, situated on a promontory between the Atlantic Ocean and the river Goiana. The beach is unspoiled, with very little tourist development, and the few bars and small shops are run by local families. The bars sell tasty and well prepared home-made seafood, and the shops are mini-markets with most basic provisions. The village is very quiet and perfectly safe, with virtually no crime.
Boat trips are available into the mangrove swamps, out to the unspoiled sandbanks off shore, and to Ilha de Itamaraca, with its historical fort.
How to get there
