About the home

Lowest Cost London Holiday on net. You don't need to break the bank if you want to see the London Olympics this summer and visit the other wonders on offer in England's magnificent, historic capital. This is a very affordable newly refurbished studio apartment on the second floor of a large Edwardian House: It is comfortable and well equipped and can sleep 2 people comfortably (4 if you are happy to squeeze in).

Parkgate House would suit someone who would like to visit London but not pay London prices. Our self contained studio apartment overlooks the beautiful Surrey Countryside. It has its own front door so once inside, our guests are totally private. There is a bedroom / living area with a single bed, a small double sofa bed and a single futon if required. Extra futons are available if required but as it is a small apartment we would recommend a maximum of 3 people (4 at the most). A digital TV with built in DVD player is available in the living / bedroom and Wi-fi internet access is available at no extra cost. We are hoping that our Sky box will be installed soon; this will give all of us at Parkgate House unlimited access to TV channels from all over Europe and beyond. The ensuite bathroom has a bath with shower attachment and there is a fully equipped kitchenette with dining facilities and washing machine.
There is a small built in wardrobe with a second wardrobe in the bedroom / living area so there is ample storage space in this small apartment for up to 4 guests. Extra storage can be provided if required. Ample bedding, towels, and kitchen linen is available as required.
The kitchen area is well stocked with glassware, crockery and cutlery. There is a hob and fridge unit with a microwave / grill and combo oven which would certainly satisfy the needs of a busy tourist schedule. There is also a washing machine with clothes horse and iron and a separate mini freezer box has just been installed..
Across the road there is a lovely park / Cricket Green with tennis and Badminton courts and mini sports centre that holds classes to suit all tastes. A safe play area for children is attached to this Green. The house benefits from a good size drive way that secures ample and safe parking for all our guests. The flat is within walking distance of cafes, shops, supermarkets, restaurants and the local railway station where you can catch a direct train to central London every 15 minutes and be there in just 45 minutes. A shuttle service to and from the local station can be provided on request.

In addition to all of the above at certain times of year our guests can benefit from the use of a new luxury gym with swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi at no extra cost or at a much reduced rate. (Subject to availability).

Please note that we are not travel agents and this is not a Holiday Village but it is a pleasant apartment in a safe, residential area of Surrey; this large Edwardian house is divided into 4 apartments;. we live in the ground floor one so we are on hand to assist guests with any aspect of their stay with us and their holiday itinerary, as much as they would like us to. This is a safe, friendly community. It is an ideal environment for anyone who wants to visit London yet get away from the hustle and bustle at the end of a frantic day in town.

Breakfast and evening meals are available downstairs on certain days if ordered in advance (please note these are not included in the price).
There is a large garden which is available to guests during summer months, but as there is a trampoline in the garden, children will only be allowed to use the garden if a parent accompanies him / her. A babysitting service may be available on certain days.

AT CERTAIN TIMES OF YEAR GUESTS IN 2012 CAN BENEFIT FROM A FAMILY BOOKING IN A NEWLY BUILT LUXURY GYM IF THEY BOOK AND PAY IN ADVANCE. THIS INCLUDES USE OF A HEATED INDOOR SWIMMING POOL, JACUZZI, SOLARIUM, SAUNA AND A VAST ARRAY OF CLASSES AT NO EXTRA COST.
There is a park opposite the house with tennis courts and a children's play area. Cricket is played on the park green every Sunday and in the summer the local council organises activities for children either at this park or at other parks or leisure centres in the local area. The large garden can be booked for barbeques when and as required. Private Parties at the house can be arranged for our guests with advance warning as can 'Special Celebration' meals / cakes etc. if you are coming to Parkgate House for a Special Birthday or other celebration, we can tailor the stay at Parkgate House accordingly.
The station is only a short walk away from the house and we are happy to provide transfers to and from the station at no extra cost.

AS WE LIVE ON HAND OURSELVES AT ALL TIMES, WE ARE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST OUR GUESTS WITH AIRPORT / STATION TRANSFERS, HOLIDAY PLANNING AND EVEN GUIDED TOURS.

In the past our tours have included visits to the House of Commons, Westminster Abbey, afternoon tea at the Liberal Club and even a private viewing of n. 10 Downing Street.
We have also arranged tours for guests to Leeds or Hever Castle, Brighton, Oxford, Stratford on Avon and even Arras and Paris in France.
Our tours are fun, safe and very competitively priced.

CHILDREN AT PARKGATE HOUSE
You often read about two for one offers for children and how children stay free or eat free or have free this or free that and so on....... The reality is very different indeed. Staying anywhere with children for any length of time can prove very expensive if you do not have cooking facilities or a fridge or a washing machine. Eating out once a day is one thing, but a family of 3, or 4 eating out three times a day is another, especially in London. We are not Disneyland and we do not claim to have a magical world of wonders in our back garden that will transport your children to another dimension, but we do provide families with all they need to ensure that their children's needs are well catered for at all times.
As one of us is a teacher we are also able to assist you will a holiday programme that is tailor-made for the needs of children and teenagers in 21st Century Britain. After spending many years organising Exchange trips to London for foreign students, we certainly know what children and teenagers love and what they don't.
London is a wonderful place for young people but it is vast and large and can be difficult to negotiate for novices. We can design a programme that will capture the immagination of both you and your children without breaking the bank. Programmes of this kind in the past have included: Ice Skating in Hyde Park, horse riding in St James's park, roller skating in Kensington Gardens, shopping in Oxford Street, attending the Children's Matinnees at Covent Garden Opera House in London at a fraction of the cost of the evening performance priced at £80 per person, the Trocadero Centre, the London Dungeon, visiting n. 10 Downing Street, visiting the House of Commons, taking the river bus to Docklands and much much more.

The South East England / Surrey region

The South East of England is well worth visiting. Not only is one of the world's most magnificent capitals just a stone's throw away but this area has so much more to offer. 2012 is particularly important as the London Olympics will attract tourists from all over the world so hotel and restaurant prices will be high. If you are planning to visit London in July / August you would be well advised to plan ahead and book early. We can provide extra accommodation for Olympics bookings providing you book early and provide exact dates and arrival / departure times.
Caterham itself is nestled in the hills of the beautiful North Downs, attracting walkers and ramblers from London and beyond to explore its countryside and enjoy a lovely lunch in one of its charming country pubs. (A perfect way to break a brisk, healthy walk on Sunday morning).
Within driving distance of Catehrham are many beautiful National Trust properties that are certainly worth a visit. These include: Hever Castle, the ancestral home of the unfortunate Anne Boleyn, Chartwell, the family home of Winston Churchill, Leeds Castle with its towers, turrets and moat, the beautiful Chaldon Church with its medieval mural depicting the afterlife as it was seen then, and so much more. Brighton, Thorpe Park (fantastic theme park for children and adults alike), Windsor Castle, Wisley Gardens are all a short drive away, as are Canterbury, Dover and the Channel Tunnel or the Ferry ports if you fancy a trip to France for the day. Guests of Parkgate House can benefit from our membership of English Heritage so will be able to visit any English Heritage sites free or at a reduced rate.
If you want to shop till you drop and not pay London prices then you cannot beat Croydon's three shopping centres. Croydon is only 15 minutes away from Caterham by train and has shops to satisfy all budgets.
So if you would like to visit London and have a little more on top then you cannot beat Parkgate House.

If you would like your children to experience riding in the beautiful North Downs, we have a link with a riding centre just a short drive away from Parkgate House. This centre runs holiday courses for children and teenagers where they actually adopt a horse of their own for the entire duration of their time there and are taught to care for it, groom it and, of course, ride it . Holiday courses run from one half day to up to 14 full days; you would not believe how reasonable the rates are for such a fantastic riding opportunity. However, we do urge all adults with young children to be Health and Saftey aware at all times at swimming pools, ice-skating rinks and riding centres.

Everyone knows that London never sleeps: London is the European Capital of Theatre, Musicals, Opera, Dance and Concerts to suit all tastes. If you book well in advance we may be able to secure you tickets at any of the above at excellent, competitive rates. London has a vast selection of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Gone are the days when London's restaurants were the poor cousins of our European neighbours; London is now rightly recognised as one of the Gastronomic Capitals of the world. You can have steak and kidney pie and a pint of beer for a few pounds in any pub in the area or enjoy a world class Indian, Italian, French meal at one of the thousands of restaurants in and around London - all very competitively priced. Otherwise treat yourself to something a little special at one of the many designer restaurants all over the capital. Our favourite has to be Ramsey's - Gordon Ramsey's flagship restaurant in Chelsea. Easily the best meal we have ever eaten anywhere.
Now that there is a direct train link from Caterham to Central London, Parkgate House is the perfect place to stay when visiting London during the day and at night. Remember we provide free station transfers any time day or night for our guests.
The weather in the South East of England can be very warm even hot in the summer months (from May to September) but the weather anywhere in England can be quite unreliable so people should always come prepared for rain. The autumn in Surrey is lovely; this area is known for its beautiful, colourful walks; the north downs are spectacular in the autumn months. Winter can be very cold some years yet extremely mild in others. However, London's attractions are amazing whatever the weather and London in the Christmas season is really quite magical.

Don't forget London is just a train ride away from Caterham and now that there are regular direct trains from Caterham to London Victoria then it is very easy to get there. Guided Tours to London or other local attractions can be arranged if required. Hever Castle, Leeds Castle, Chartwell are all very close by. The area is surrounded by Golf Clubs and country pubs full of character well known for their excellent yet reasonably priced cuisine. A brisk rural walk to the Bell for Sunday Lunch or the best Fish and Chips in the south east is a must.
Our local riding centres organise holiday riding weeks for children and adults at a very reasonable price. Riding through the beautiful and peaceful Surrey countryside on a Sunday morning is not easily forgotten. We can also arrange hacks in London's beautiful Hyde Park for experienced riders and children can benefit from one to one riding tuition at the same time.

Parkgate House is within very easy reach of airports, stations and buses. Gatwick airport is just 13 miles away (20KM) and a National Rail station connecting it to London and all parts of the UK is a short walk away.
We are happy to provide a shuttle service for our guests for airport and station transfers as required. The excellent train service from Gatwick to Caterham is also available and takes very little time. Low cost no frills air travel from anywhere in the world to Gatwick Airport could make Parkgate House a convenient and cheaper alternative to hotels in and around London.

Staying at Parkgate House was fantastic. I had the best of both worlds; my own self contained mini apartment in a safe, green and spacious environment yet the wonders of London just a train ride away. Brilliant! The Best!

It was the best London Holiday ever. Less than an hour from London by train but SO MUCH cheaper than any London hotel and so much nicer. We ordered evening meals on three nights and they were fantastic. We will definitely be booking it again.

We stayed at Parkgate House when we heard that they specialised in Celebration Holidays. It was our 10th Wedding Anniversary so we wanted something a bit special. It was lovely. We found Champagne, flowers and a basket of fruit in the flat and the meal that evening was amazing. Candles all around and beautiful live piano music in the background and to end the evening a young girl sang us a beautiful Italian aria from Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro''.

I came to Parkgate House 5 years ago, initially just for 3 weeks while I found somewhere to live permanently but the landlords were so kind and friendly and hospitable that I ended up staying for three years.
