Catania has a population of 290,571 inhabitants and is the capital of the province of Sicily.

The city of Catania is one of 15 metropolitan Italian cities and is the most densely populated part of Sicily. It is the tenth Italian city by population.

Founded in 729 BC Greeks from Chalcis, has a long history, characterized by various rulers, whose remains today enrich the artistic, architectural and cultural heritage.

In the course of its history has been destroyed several times by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive, in historical times, is that of 1669) and earthquakes (the most catastrophic remember were those of 1169 and 1693).

The baroque style of its historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with seven towns of the Val di Noto (Caltagirone, Militello Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli) in 2002.

It 'a lively, sometimes chaotic city, characterized by a baroque center, in which are embedded the remains of the greek-roman domination.

In the historical center there are also two famous street markets: the colorful fish market called Pescheria and the lively Fera 'o Luni.

In the evening the center is animated by many pubs and restaurants where it is easy to eat cheaply typical specialties of Sicilian cuisine.

Catania is also the perfect place to hold brief but intense trips to the beach of Acicastello and Acitrezza or the highest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna.

From Catania is possible to reach easily Syracuse, with its important remains of Greek domination, and the beautiful natural reserve of Vendicari. A few kilometers from Vendicari there is Noto, important testimony of Sicilian Baroque.
