About this location
The Sicily region
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. To the north, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east is divided from the Italian mainland by the Strait of Messina and is washed by the Ionian Sea and south-west is separated from Africa by the Strait of Sicily.
Sicily has a form of "triangle" whose vertices are: Cape Pelorus (or Punta del Faro) in Messina, at the top north-eastern Cape Boeo (or Lilybaeum) in Marsala, which heads north-western Cape Passero to Portopalo South Summit.
Sicily belongs to the African plate, with the exception of the northeastern part of which belongs to the Eurasian plate. The sliding of the African plate subduction that dips under the Eurasian plate has resulted in the creation of mountains of the region and the presence of frequent seismic activity and volcanic tectonic origin.
Between 5.96 and 5.3 million years, during the Messinian (latest Miocene phase of the period), the Mediterranean became isolated from the Atlantic Ocean, probably because of increased tectonic activity. This led to the salinity crisis: the Mediterranean Sea began to evaporate more quickly and the salt concentration increased. Carbonates and sulfates were deposited in large quantities on the seabed and a long trace is left in the mines of rock salt and gypsum, which can still be found in the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Enna.
A geological feature is the volcanic sedimentary Macalube of Aragon, in the province of Agrigento. This rare phenomenon has created the so-called hill Vulcanelli, barren area, in color from white to dark gray, populated by a series of mud volcanoes, around one meter high. The phenomenon is related to the presence of very large clay soils, interspersed with layers of salt water, bubbles of methane gas that overhang subjected to some pressure. The gas, break through the soil, rises to the surface, carrying with it sediments of clay and water, giving rise to a cone of mud, and the top is similar to a volcanic crater. The phenomenon is sometimes explosive character, with expulsion of clayey material mixed with gas and water thrown at a considerable height.
Catania has a lively nightlife, also known abroad as one of the busiest cities in Europe for fun and entertainment. One of the most popular in this direction is the historic center, especially between Piazza Duomo and Piazza Universita Teatro Massimo where the bulk of nightclubs, often crowded, especially in summer, when the streets and squares can become a "offshoot" of activities, opening the city to the coffee concert.
The tradition of performing at local bars or restaurants they were, arose from the first broadcast of the phenomenon in Italy, with the opening of nightclubs also suitable for small forms of entertainment in the city of Naples in the late nineteenth century. The writers of Catania, who were often working in Naples, the city also brought the new bulding. However, the phenomenon experienced since World War II to an abrupt halt. In the late sixties and early seventies there was an early sign of recovery, although once again interrupted by the next decade. The rebirth and its regularization of coffee concert today in Catania should the agreement between operators and the local administration of the mid-nineties, led by then Mayor Enzo Bianco, who wanted this very convention, directing attention toward the center otherwise destined to oblivion.
A major attraction of Catania cuisine is undoubtedly the beverage kiosk, serving refreshing drinks summer, typical of urban culture. The kiosks beverages are unique in their kind: a time there were vendors of soft drinks (the Zammù - ie anise first): As this activity has stabilized and shady places where strategic lurking to sell refreshments to Catania suffocated by the heat, the sellers are located in these particular architectures square or circular openings from which - similar to the windows - they distribute the preparations.
The phenomenon of the kiosks began in 1896 with the kiosk Costa, who was in, and Stesichorus Square Vezzosi the kiosk in Piazza Duomo. More recently a few years is to Giammona, who was in Piazza Cavour. In the early twentieth century adopted an ordinance that the sight of the ladies to drink at the kiosk without disturb public order and so the kiosks were moved: the kiosk was moved from Costa Stesichorus Square in Piazza Santo Spirito, the kiosk and the Vezzosi Giammona of the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
It seems that the tradition of fruit syrups mixed with soda water resulting from the use of naturally effervescent NAFTA Lake, near Palagonia (the so-called mofeta of Palici, characterized by strong emissions of carbon dioxide already being exploited for commercial purposes and the
whose name evidently refers to the property). The most famous drink to enjoy in the kiosk is soda water, lemon and salt, a simple recipe very refreshing, like the mandarin-lemon syrup based precisely tangerine and lemon juice squeezed on the spot.
One of the most popular is the characteristic of the Catania fish market fish of the more glowing colors, sounds and smells. Another characteristic is the market of Piazza Carlo Alberto, better known as "Fera o Luni," or the "Fair of the Mondays'" because the market was originally active only one day a week, just on Monday. In the same square every Sunday held an important "flea market".
A market of "bric a brac" is open on Sundays under the arches of the "sea" near the Villa Pacini. Another popular market is held on Friday in the streets in the neighborhood north of the Viceroy of the Forest Barrier. A resource not least about the neighborhood markets in Catania.

"Something truly special"
Location, privacy and insight. These three things come to my mind first when thinking back of our stay in this wonderful apartment of Daria's. Many people point out the quality of the furniture or tiles first, however, having all these top-top quality I would focus on how this little haven contributed to our Sicilian experience.
Location: in the very heart of Catania, the flat is 5 min walking distance from the best restaurants and club scene. 10 min drive from a freshly modern crystal clear lido (Bellatrix) and ideally located to do daytrips to Taormina and Syracuse. What else to ask for?
Privacy: the apartment has two private roof terraces with all around panorama and the smoky Etna in the background. Being on top of the city and having a drink while the sun sets is a bliss. Even more wonderful to be able to join in the crowd for a fun evening in the main promenade after descending only a few flights of stairs
Insight: the apartment is located above Daria's which is a huge bonus. As we arrived late on a Saturday she invited us over for breakfast during which she explained many things about the city and the surroundings (divine clementine marmalade she makes!). She or her assistant was available all the time to help us out with little issues or give recommendations. If only for a week we felt like part of the community which is a genuine and unique experience.
Thank you Daria for the amazing time!
