The Sicily region

Sicily is an autonomous region with special status, part of Italy insular. With its 25,710 kilometres ² is the largest region of Italy, and the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

The history of Sicily has been influenced by the many rulers who have passed on its soil. Due to its geographical location, right in the middle of the Mediterranean, Sicily has had a significant role in historical events that have had as protagonists the peoples of our sea. The succession of various civilizations have enriched the Sicily of urban settlements, monuments and ancient monuments that make the region one of the privileged places where history can be relived through the pictures of the signs that time has passed and scratched up today.

For the triangular shape, Sicily in ancient times was called Triquetra or Trinacria. Because of its location, the region and its surrounding islands are affected by intense volcanic activity. The most important volcanoes: Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano, and have the peculiarity of being three different types of eruptions of basaltic lavas interspersed with periods of calm on the first, continuous eruptions, and lava fountains, the second, whose characteristics are been taken as a typological model by scientists in the field, who coined the term "Strombolian to describe similar activities of terrestrial volcanoes, and finally the explosive type opliniano third, characterized by long periods of apparent calm and violent eruptions.

Also please note that the eruptive activity in the nineteenth century, the area of the Strait of Sicily today named bench Graham, has led to the birth of the ephemeral island Ferdinandea. The territory of Sicily also includes several smaller islands, such as the Aeolian archipelago and Ustica north, and that of Egadi west and south, the islands of Pantelleria, Lampedusa and Linosa, and other minorities.

Etna is the highest volcano in Europe, located in north-eastern Sicily and is active from time immemorial.

With its enormous bulk, overlooking the Ionian Sea to the east, north is bounded by the river Alcantara, which carved its bed on lava has given rise to beautiful gorges, the so-called "Gole Alcantara. The west and south west of Etna is bordered by the river Simeto. Etna is currently about 3330 meters high, stretches across a perimeter of about 210 km and an area of 1600 square kilometres.

Catania

Pozzillo ( Pizziddu in Sicilian) is a fraction of Acireale, Province of Catania. It is located in the extreme northern part of the township, surrounded by citrus gardens on the shore of the Ionian Sea. Is about 6 km from Acireale . Its name derives from the Sicilian Pizziddu which means small or little toe head sea.

The village is built around the old church , which already existed in the sixteenth century , which stood right on Pizziddu and of which no trace remains today , having been demolished to make room for speculation in the 70s. The current church building in the nineteenth century is located in the center of the country, and is dedicated to St. Margaret. More recent training is Pozzillo Above about 1 km away, on the road to Ripon.

A Pozzillo there is a spring of mineral water slightly alkaline . The water is classified as sulfate and magnesium , were also taken through three artificial wells and bottled and marketed since 1926. The company Acquapozzillopoteva boast of having provided King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria , who knew the water during his stay in Sicily. The activity , which was passed to the Region of Sicily, has ceased in the 2000.
