The Sicily region

Sicily is internationally renowned for its history and beauty, for the smell of lemons and oranges you can breath everywhere on the island, for the friendly hospitality of its inhabitants, for the clear blue sea coasts, for the highest volcano in Europe, and, last but not least, for the special food you can taste, for its fish and the sweets.... and for many other reasons.

History : In the past Sicily has been dominated by many Conquerors : Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Spanish. Wherever you drive in Sicily, you can see the remains of each domination.

In 30 minutes drive you can visit the Greek theatre in Taormina, a village famous all over the world for the beauty of its houses, its shops and the charming atmosphere you can breath when walking along its small and charming lanes.

In 40 minutes drive you reach Catania, one of the biggest town in the area. A walk in the town centre will be very interesting : you can see the remains of a Greek-Roman theatre, the Cathedral, Castel Ursino ( which is a fortress built around 1240 to protect the city from the sea and then used as a royal residence and as a prison), the Bellini Theater (opened in 1890), with its wrought iron in the portico and very beautiful inside, where you can admire the 4 tires and a gallery, corridors and frescoed ceilings.

One of the most attractive places to visit in Catania is Via Crociferi, a true triumph of 18th Century Baroque Style, with its opulent line of religious buildings. Very interesting will also be a visit of the Botanic Gardens, spread over a surface area of 16,000 square meters, where exotic, rare, aquatic and Sicilian plants are grown. If you visit Catania in February, you can't miss the feast of the Saint Agata, whose statue is carried for 4 days along most of the streets of the town, followed by thousands of people. However, anytime of the year you're in Catania , we recommend a stop in the typical fish market.

In 1 hour drive is Siracusa, one of the most famous town in Sicily. You can visit the Greek theatre and the Roman amphitheatre, where Greek tragedies are played according to the ancient tradition. You should also visit the isle of Ortigia, the nucleus of the old city. It's a very nice tourist place for relaxing walks along charming lanes, while visiting interesting museums and beautiful historical buildings.

If you want to go on visiting the remains of the island's Conquerors, you could drive to Agrigento ( 2 hours by car) and see the Valley of the Temples, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and a Unesco world heritage site since 1998. In the Valey are still sited the great temples of ancient Akragas : the temple of Hera (Juno) Lacinia, Concordia, Heracles (Hercules), Olympian Zeus (Jupiter), Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri) and Hephaistos (Vulcan).

THE SEA : In Sicily the sea is very clear and mostly clean. In the nearby of the house you have different kinds of coasts. In a short drive ( min 15 minutes, max 30min ) , you can choose among white sandy beach , small-stony beach, or rocks . If required, there's also the opportunity to rent a sailing boat for daily trips.

THE VOLCANO : Etna is the highest volcano in Europe, since it's around 3330 meters high. If you want to have a look, there are many paths you can walk along in a short time. There's also the possibility to drive up close to the main crater, only with the authorized means (daily transfers are organized on request).

FOOD : Sicilian cooking is famous for many reasons : for the smell and taste of its fruit and vegetable , grown in sunny gardens and collected only when ripe enough to be at their best ; for the fresh fish and mussels you can buy in the typical fish markets, where is not rare to find live octopus or prawn, so fresh that can be eaten uncooked ; for the ice creams lovers ,we recommend to taste the 'granita', a typical dessert which is usually eaten at breakfast, accompanied by what we call 'brioche' , a sort of sweet bread you can't resist .

Catania

Our country house is peacefully situated half-way between Volcano Etna and the eastern sea coast, 5 minutes drive from the villages of Macchia and Santa Venerina. In 20 minutes drive you can choose whether to be climbing on the volcano or swimming in the blue sea.

Very close (10 min by car) is the village of Giarre, very nice for its shops, and the village of Riposto, with its international ship port, where you can relax walking on the pier close to sailing boats and yachts, or decide to rent one of them for a daily trip.

In 15 min drive is Acireale, a small town famous for its baroque buildings and church paintings. For the ice cream lovers, there's a great variety of tastes. If you want to taste the best granita, this is the right place. The guests who visit the town in February will be amazed seeing the Carnival with its flower cars and masks.

If you love island legends, you should visit Acitrezza ( 20 min drive), a characteristic village of fishermen , where Omero placed the setting of one of the stops Ulysses made on his long journey back home to Itaca.

"A beautiful place to stay"

We have been so impressed with Cristina's hospitality.

On arrival, we were welcomed with a selection of extremely tasty home cooked food, that was topped off with local wine. What a start to a holiday after a day of travelling!

The house is in a fantastic elevated position with panoramic views from every angle. We have enjoyed spectacular vistas of Etna in full eruption from the terraces. Then by contrast a tranquil sunrise over the sea is as beautiful as any location.

The house is very well equipped and everything that you could need, is to hand.

Once outside, the gardens are an ideal area for children to play safely with a selection of toys that are provided.

Depending upon the season their are abundant supplies of fruit to pick from the connecting land including oranges, grapefruit, kiwi and grapes to mention just a few...

We have been so impressed with our two previous holidays in this property, that we have now booked our third visit.

We have been visiting Sicily for many years but feel that this property is the best. Highly recommended!

"This Villa is absolutely wonderful, the best we have stayed in, anywhere."

I scoured websites and read reviews looking for the ideal Villa in Sicily.I had strict criteria, I needed 2 double rooms and a twin, I wanted sea views if possible and Volcano views were a must. I wanted to be out of town and not crushed in among other properties. I read the reviews for this Villa and they all sounded too good to be true, I swapped some emails with Cristina and she was so helpful. This villa is better than it sounds, the large terrace with views across the sea to Italy, the other terrace facing the mighty Etna, which erupted for us, the amazing BBQ area. It couldn't get better...until you get to think about the hosts, they met us just of the motorway , late at night and lead us to the villa in the dark, which was so helpful, and then they provided welcome snacks which were delightful and home made. Later in the week, we had arranged for Cristina to provide us with a full local meal, it was so memorable, I would strongly recommend it. Other highlights include picking fresh oranges and lemons every morning and making our own juice. The final word should go to Etna though, I still have some ash that fell on us in a small box by my bedside to remind me of our wonderful holiday. We will return. I cannot recommend this location and villa enough.

"Magnificent views, beautiful home, and gracious host family!"

What an amazing place! We enjoyed the views of Etna on one side, the sea on the other, and the lights of the cities below. The lovely house is surrounded by a "Garden of Eden" with an incredible variety of furits - grapes, oranges, kiwis, avacados, lemons, figs - which the owners encourage you to pick and enjoy. Equally amazing were the delectable array of Sicilian dishes prepared for us by the family and the generous welcome package of staples, all of which we enjoyed throughout our stay. We have enjoyed self-catering homes in various places around Europe, and our experiences at Borgo Degala Del Re are definitely at the top of our list! I would highly recommend this home to anyone planning a stay on the east coast of Sicily. It was one of our most memorable travel experiences!

"Home Away From Home"

When we arrived at Borgo dagala del we were greeted by the owners and their hospitality of fresh fruit picked right from their garden, baked goods, a "Welcome" basket as well as Internet Access upon request. The home was immaculate and we found all the comforts. We were amazed by the views of the Sea on one side of the home and Volcano Etna on the other. We enjoyed the enormous wooden table outside the home amongst the beautiful gardens and landscape where we shared many meals with our Sicilian Family as they came to visit. We would not only recommended staying here to others, we would look forward to spending another vacation in this home on a return visit to Sicily.

"Like on a cloud, a nice little piece/peace of heaven."

As some other user's said, the place is so much nicer than the pictures can show.
The house is big (more than enough for 2 couples), was super clean, so lovely, and very nicely located: in between the Etna (which view we enjoyed every morning) and the sea (we could admire every evening, with the city's shimmering lights in the night).
And what a welcome! Thanks to Cristina and all her nice family that gave us the warmest welcome ever. That and all the food (a.o. the antipasti) awaiting us on that Sunday evening couldn't be a better start for this holiday; the more on our first day of arrival, with the shops closed.
The house is geographically well located too, as we went to visit all the east coast of the island from there. But when looking for it, this will be one of these occasions were you're so glad to have invested in a GPS.
Another huge plus: the many fruit trees all around the house, soooo tasty (like everything we ate while in Sicily, actually). We had fresh lemonade almost every day after our trips or after a nice day at the beach. Thanks again to Cristina to all her good advices.
Considering the barbecue, the terrace, the fresh fish from the markets close by, we HAD to gill on one evening; it would've been a terrible waste if we didn't.
We felt so well that we stayed outside the house, talking, enjoying the views, the cool breeze (and a Limoncello) every evening until 1am.
Really, the perfect place for stressed city people like us...
I haven't miss any opportunity to talk about it since then.

"Fantastic views in all directions, and great garden."

We stayed as a party of 5 adults and one 3-year old child, and had a fantastic time. The views of Etna to one side, and of the sea on the other, are even better than the pictures make it look. We picked oranges and grapefruits every day for breakfast, and had an open fire every night.

We arranged with Cristina that she would prepare a dinner for us on arrival, and also that she would do some shopping for us so we had food for the first few days. The food was all excellent, and I would highly recommend that other people arrange this.
