The Algarve region
The Algarve's 200 kilometre stretch of southern shoreline is one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. The region has attracted visitors since the time of the Phoenicians, but today it caters for millions of tourists a year with its stunning coastline, excellent golf courses and pleasant year round climate.
Bordered on two sides by the Atlantic, the Algarve is divided from the rest of Portugal by a series of low lying mountains. In the east, the Guardiana River forms a scenic border with neighbouring Spain.
The region's capital, Faro, is built around a charming harbour at the edge of a wide lagoon. Its main attractions include a maritime museum and a 13th century cathedral.
The Eastern Algarve is very different compared to the rugged beauty found west of Faro. Its tidal marshlands have a tranquil beauty and the small resorts along the coast have retained much of their character, looking today as they must have looked long ago. Here, tourism blends in perfectly with local activities creating a relaxed way of life. There is a tinge of excitement and even romance about those ferry or tiny boat trips to the islands, where visitors are rewarded with superb, less crowded bathing beaches and warm waters.
Castro Marim / Altura area
Altura is a wonderful village which has retained impost of its original Portuguese charm and feel. During the day, there is a laid back, relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the sun and a beer at one of the seafront bars or take a stroll and do some leisurely shopping. For the sun worshippers, the expansive white beaches have sun beds for hire and provide great walking territory into the neighbouring resorts! In the evening, visitors can choose from a wide selection of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes ranging from the cheap and cheerful Tasca bars to High Quality cuisine. The village is generally very family orientated. Car hire is not essential; good bus and rail networks can be used to explore the surrounding areas.
BEACHES
The beach of Altura (Alagoa) is the sun worshipper’s paradise with white expansive sands and good water for swimming. Located at the bottom end of the village, the beach can be reached in around 20 minutes on foot. There beach has a couple of excellent fish restaurants to try as well as sun beds and shades for hire. For those who enjoy walking, the neighbouring resorts along the coastline can also be reached. With car hire, the other local beaches are a must to be explored. Heading further East, Praia Verde is highly recommended with a hill top restaurant overlooking the bay - and just next door, Cabeco Beach is largely unspoilt and very peaceful offering uninterrupted sands as far as the eye can see.
ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO
Altura itself is primarily a place for dining and relaxing, however, by travelling a little further afield there are a good range of things to do to suit all tastes. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the River Guadiana or nature trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve where bird watching is in abundance! By travelling towards the West there are some excellent shopping centres in Faro and Ghia as well as the famous Water Parks and Zoo Marine (wonderful for children), all easily reached by car (around 45 minutes) or by day trip coach. The Spanish border town of Ayamonte is a mere 10kms away where the delights of another country can be sampled along with wine, Tapas and shopping and can be reached by bus, train, ferry or car. Seville is around 150km. For budding historians, as well as Tavira, Castro Marim Castle is a must. GOLF is also a key feature of this locality with 7 courses within a 20km radius. Special rates and packages available upon request
TAVIRA TOWN
When staying in Altura a visit to Tavira is essential and is around 15kms from the house. As one of the regions oldest and most attractive places, you cannot fail to be enthralled by its unspoilt charm, character and tranquillity. As you wander along the cobbled streets, you'll see an abundance of history. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town across the River Gilao, its sides decorated with traditional old bars and restaurants, there are many churches (37 in total!) to view, along with the town castle, several monuments and the typical fisherman's harbour leading to the River Formosa Natural Park. There is a wonderful daily market selling fresh home grown produce, and the local beach of Tavira is accessible by small ferry boat and boasts excellent facilities and a wonderful holiday atmosphere. Horse drawn carriages and a small train operate around the town and are perfect for seeing all the sights and experiencing the atmosphere of this town where time has stood still!
How to get there
It is becoming increasingly easy to travel to the Algarve where the main airport is Faro. The most favoured budget airlines are Easyjet, Thomsonfly, Jet2.com, Bmi Baby and Monarch.
The best website that we can recommend is www.skyscanner.net where you can select your chosen dates and preferred departure airport and you are presented with a 1 simple list of all available flights, the operator names and the prices! This saves trawling through mountains of different websites.
We can assist with cheap car hire quotes or airport transfers. Please do ask us for information when making an enquiry.
