This is a modern townhouse built in 2007. It is situated about 5 minutes walk from the centre of the historic village of Castro Marim. The village is clustered around its twelfth century castle and its sixteenth century fort. It has a good selection of local bars and restaurants, an excellent supermarket, post office, chemist and other small shops. A modern library provides open-access computers and an English book exchange service.

We use the house as our second home so it is furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The large (32 sq metres) lounge/dining room opens out to the swimming pool area. The pool is approx. 3 X 4 metres. The surrounding patio is furnished with an outdoor dining table and chairs as well as sun loungers. The built-in barbecue is big enough for a large party and we also have a smaller barbecue for when there's just two of you. The walls round the pool are decorated with local tiles and bougainvillea is being trained to grow over the back wall. The large kitchen is at the front of the house. It has all the appliances you might expect including an electric juicer for that freshly squeezed orange juice. We also provide a cool box and beach parasols for guests who want to take cool drinks or a picnic to the beach. There is a downstairs cloakroom.

Upstairs there are two double bedrooms each with 2 single beds and a guest bathroom. This has a four piece suite with shower over the bath. The bath is a whirlpool bath. The large master bedroom has cosy sheepskin rugs either side of the king-sized bed, a dressing area and an en-suite bathroom with a full bath with shower over. All the sheets and pillowcases are pure cotton. We provide all linen and towels (except beach towels) and we hope you will like the huge size of the bath sheets. From the master bedroom a staircase leads up to the superb roof terrace. This is a wonderful place to sit with an evening drink admiring the sunset, the floodlit castle and the twinkling lights across the river in the Spanish town of Ayamonte.

Our local agents are a British couple who live a short walk away. They will meet you on arrival and can give you lots of information about the area. The house will be cleaned before you arrive. For two week holidays we also offer an interim clean and linen change at the end of your first week.

Castro Marim is an ideal centre for exploring the Eastern Algarve and the Spanish Costa de la Luz. It is next to the river Guadiana which forms the boundary between Spain and Portugal. The salt marshes along the river are an important nature reserve with over 132 species of birds recorded there. Although Castro Marim is about 5 miles inland the nearest beaches are only 7 minutes drive from our house and offer miles of golden sand backedby pine woods. There are many marked walks through the pinewoods. The interesting historic town of Tavira is about 20 minutes drive and, if you want to go further afield, Seville is less than 90 minutes along the motorway.

The Algarve region

The Eastern Algarve is a relatively undeveloped area. Unspoilt golden beaches stretch from the mouth of the Guadiana River to the nature reserve at Ria Formosa. Many people still make their living from agriculture and it is not unusual to find a local family driving along in their mule cart. The area is home to several important nature reserves which attract many different species of birds. Flamingos over-winter here and in the Spring Storks return to their nests. This was once a Moorish region and traces of their occupation are easily found. So too are the castles built to defend the Algarve against attacks from the Spanish, the Moors and the Barbary pirates.

Castro Marim

Castro Marim itself is a small village nestling round its castle and its fort. The nearest town is Vila Real do Santo Antonio. This is well known for its textile shops which offer good quality, towels, table linen and embroidery. The town was rebuilt in the eighteenth century by the Marques de Pombal and the central streets form a grid pattern. There is a particulary pleasant walk along the riverfront from where you can gaze across at the Spanish town of Ayamonte. A regular passenger ferry still runs across the river to connect the two towns but nowadays most people drive across the International bridge on the motorway. For lovers of beach resorts both Monte Gordo and Altura are within 10 minutes drive of Castro Marim. Both are family resorts with the usual selection of shops, bars and restaurants. An interesting but slow excursion is to take the train from Vila Real to Faro. This winds its way leisurely through the Algarve contryside stopping at all the small villages.

"Bright, spacious townhouse on edge of interesting village of Castro Marim."

spacious town house, bright, clean and well furnished. There is a rooftop patio area as well as a nice secluded courtyard garden at the back of the property with plunge pool. Easy parking and short walk into the small town of Castro Marim, which has a good grocery store and a few local bars. Lots to see in the surrounding area and a short drive into Spain.
