Villa Mimosa is in a fantastic quiet location. it is just a few minutes drive from Castro Marim, with its bars and supermarket, and there are some excellent beaches nearby, our favourite being the beanbag beach! The villa itself is a real home from home, it is huge, it is also very well equipped with a brilliant range of games and books, satelliter tv. with surround sound and a great barbecue. There is even a dishwasher and washing machine. The pool is a bit chilly in March but the weather was hot enough for a tentative dip. There is plenty to do in and around, Villa Real is a large town with a pretty marina and plenty of restaurants and Spain is just over the river. We did not venture over this time as we are saving that for our next visit. The Portuguese roads are very quiet and driving from the airport is easy, we had the motorway virtually to ourselves, although the toll system is somewhat haphazard. Can recommend a great local restaurant on the way to the beach at San Antonio, it has panoramic views over the river to Spain and the sea bass was excellent. Also look out for the storks nesting on telegraph poles all around the local area. If you want to chillax Villa Mimosa is the place to be, there was nothing we did not like. |

Travelling over from NZ we stopped off in Villa Mimosa for 8 days as the ending to our European tour and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! The location just on the border with Spain meant we got to see both countries and we even took a road trip up to Seville (the Cathedral there is incredible). The local towns were so much fun to explore: there were castles in Castro Marim, excellent shops in Villa Real and it's Spanish opposite Ayamonte (we took a water taxi between the two) and of course the super beach in Monte Gordo. We were initially worried about the weather with it being February but we were pleasantly surprised. The locals gave us a few funny looks as they were in thick jackets and we were sunbathing in our togs, but it definitely felt warm to us! The villa itself was perfect. It comfortably slept the 8 of us (3 twin shared and the couple in the master bed) and the living area was comfortable and spacious. The kitchen was well equipped (although we ended up eating out in Monte Gorde half the time; if you like your sea food it's too good to pass up!) and the air con kept the place nice and warm when it cooled down at night. What really made the Villa though was the pool! The grounds were beautifully maintained and the pool veranda got so much sun. One of my best days was spent lazing by the pool reading a book as certain other members of our party had discovered the local golf courses. (Yes they hire clubs and, by all accounts, they're fantastic if you're into that sort of thing!) A car is essential for this villa, not least because there is so much to see in the local area. We hired two small vehicle as it was cheaper than getting one big one and it allowed our party to split up as needed. The villa was easy to find from the directions, although it was hard to explain it's location to the local taxi drivers when we wanted to go out for the evening. We ended up settling on having one designated driver take two trips out and then at the end of the night piling in a cab and yelling "follow that car" as they headed home! Speaking of which, the night-life in Monte Gordo was wonderful. There was a pedestrian area which stayed busy until very late with stalls and street artists/performers and plenty of friendly bars. One felt very safe and comfortable wondering around at night. All in all it was a brilliant part of our European adventure! |

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Mimosa, a spacious and comfortable home from home. The pool area, garden and terraces were fantastic giving a choice of sunshine or shade at any time of day. Sun was on the pool area all day and we had some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. A great base from which to discover the real Portugal with something for everyone in the beautiful countryside, at wonderful nearby beaches or exploring quaint towns all of which are within easy reach. You are spoilt for choice with an abundance of local restaurants or shop at the local markets and make use of the fantastic barbecue area. For us Villa Mimosa has it all and we hope to return again soon. |
