The County Cork region

County Cork is in the South West of Ireland. It is the largest county in Ireland with varied scenery and a temperate climate. It typically has warmer temperatures and more moderate rainfall than most other. It contains many historic landmarks, touristic attractions, beautiful unspoilt scenery and very friendly people. Nearby counties Waterford & Kerry also offer marvelous touristic options. It is easily accessible by low-cost airlines via Cork Airport (ORK) - 1 hours drive, Shannon Airport (SNN) - 2.5 hours drive, Kerry Airport (KIR) - 1 hours drive, Waterford Airport (WAT) - 2.5 hours drive and Dublin Airport (DUB) - 3.5 hours drive. We recommend www.skyscanner.net, www.aferry.com and www.autoeurope.ie for lowest air, ferry and car hire fares.

Castletownshend

Castletownshend is a historic, seaside village which was the setting for the TV series the Irish RM, which boasts marvelous views of Castlehaven Bay and islands. It is situated in the heart of West Cork which is considered one of the most scenic parts of the Ireland and arguably the gourmet capital of Ireland. Castletownshend itself boasts an excellent bar restaurant (Mary Anns) which offers many excellent seafood dishes made with the freshest fish sourced from nearby Union Hall fishing village. The village is near Lough Hyne, Tragumna (Blue Flag sandy beach), Toe Head and is ideal for discovering little known smaller coves and beaches. Nearby towns and villages including Skibbereen, Union Hall, Glandore, Tragumna, Baltimore, Clonakilty and Kinsale boast some of the countries best restaurants specialising in fresh and organic ingredients. The local bar Lil McCarthys is a beautiful traditonal style bar with beer garden in summer overlooking the harbour. There is a quaint local shop which offers a wide range of groceries, newspapers, fuel and other necessities, supplemented by major supermarket chains and many local speciality shops in nearby Skibberreen.
