The Province of Munster region
County Cork is the largest county in Ireland encompassing the wonderfully picturesque south west corner of the country. West Cork is a magical land steeped in myth and legend with craggy mountains, hidden valleys, meandering rivers with spectacular waterfalls and brooding lakes.
The coastline has been ground from the land by the power and magnificence of the ever changing Atlantic Ocean. The people are welcoming, resourceful and always prepared to tell a story or sing a song about the history of the land and its people. The sheer beauty of the land, the ‘craic’ of traditional music in the local hostelry, and the warm hospitality of the people are what make staying in this spectacular region such a memorable pleasure.
The town has an eclectic selection of shops including supermarkets, health foods, arts and crafts, fine local butchers and pubs (such as MacCarthy's Bar as featured in, and on the front cover of the best-selling book of the same name by Pete MacCarthy). In addition, in the town square, you can buy German Crepes with a bewildering selection of fillings, cooked freshly while you wait, or you can relax in the variety of restaurants in the town and surrounding area, nearly all of which offer a mouth-watering selection of freshly caught and cooked local fish.
Castletownbere is a short distance away and is a major fishing port. The fishing fleets moor up in the habour and bring ashore their catch of mainly white fish which you can buy fresh at the dockside Fishermans' Co-op. There are also many local shell fish operators who also supply the co-op.
