The Western Ireland region

The cottage is on the border of Roscomon, Mayo and Galway. 8 Miles from Sligo county border. 40 minutes from Galway City. 45 minutes from Sligo. 2.5 hours Dublin. 3.5 hours Belfast. 5 minutes drive Ballyhaunis. 10 minutes drive Knock Airport and Castlerea. 20 minutes Claremorris. Just 7 miles to the extended Westport N4 new road. Knock Shrine 10 minutes drive away. The region is mostly rural with green fields and woodland. Away from the N (national) roads there are few cars to be seen. Each of the 3 surrounding towns has a golf course. Lidl is 7 miles south. Tesco 20 minutes away at Claremorris, Aldi also there. The Irish climate is cooler than the UK, the average temperature is pleasant, not too hot or too cold. The most important part of visiting Ireland are the people, they are warm, welcoming and generous.

Castlerea

Although the cottage is located on a quiet back road it has a central location for seeing and experiencing the varied locations in Ireland. The area is fabulous for fishing, sighteeing and walking, we have 11 lochs and 3 rivers nearby. The River Moy is 45 minutes away, world famous for salmon fishing. Walkers and hikers are one hour 15 minutes from the famous Croagh Patrick mountain, just beyond Westport. The stunning limestone table The Burren is 1.5 hours south west. Strandhill just an hour away. It has surfing and wonderful seaweed baths. Athlone has the big shops like J.C. Penny and is an hour away. Galway centre has the lovely old town, seaside walks, shopping, the beautiful cathedral plus so much more. The pub is within walking distance a mile away, just opposite the old church. There is traditional Irish music, singing and dancing at weekends.
