The County Kerry region
County Kerry, traditionally known as the 'kingdom', is situated in the extreme south-west of Ireland. Kerry has two contrasting types of terrain - the mountainous south with the Beara, Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas, and the smaller 'plains' area that stretches as far north as the Shannon estuary. Along the coast, sandy bays alternate with cliffs and rocky headlands. You'll also see regions of outstanding scenic beauty, such as the Ring of Kerry.
The Castlemaine area
The drive from Tralee to Brandon is spectacular, and in the Brandon Art Gallery, the beauty of Kerry's scenery is captured in a collection of stunning oil paintings. From Brandon, you can walk over the Conor Pass to Dingle - or simply climb Mount Brandon to experience raw beauty at its best. However, scenery is by no means Kerry's only attraction there are many coastal resorts with excellent angling, great cycling, superb golf courses and a wealth of ancient monuments.
The cottage is in a quiet secluded location at the end of the road beside a stream between Castlemaine (3 miles) and Inch (12 miles). Nearest shop/pub 2 miles.

We stayed here as a family at the end of May 2013, we have a 14 year old daughter and a 5 year old son who has autism. We really couldn't have found a more perfect place to stay in Ireland. The beautiful house so tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and filled with every amenity and item you could ever need in a fully functioning home, nevermind a holiday let, was flooded with light and space and had stunning and mind blowing views through every window to the mountains and glen. Within minutes of our arrival we felt the stress literally bleed out of us. Our teenager took the opportunity of peace and tranquility to revise for her coming exams and was thankful for the relaxed pace of life in Ireland. Our son was over the moon with the room full of toys and games left by the owners' children for the children of the guests and spent a number of hours riding around on a scooter he'd discovered in a little playhouse in the garden too. The swings and little beck in the garden were also an absolute godsend to a little by who takes a lot of comfort in plodging about in nature "looking for tadpoles" and swinging. For a child who finds it difficult to settle in new places he certainly showed no signs of anxiety here. In fact the highlight of his week were some little lambs and ewes the owners had put in the paddock at the bottom of the garden, our son spent many a happy hour in the evening sitting on the fence and chatting to these animals :) while we sat on the patio enjoying many glasses of wine! The owner greeted us on arrival and spent some time telling us about all the wonderful places to visit in the local area. He really is a mine of information, having been born and bred locally and having roots going back centuries in the area - there's a charming family history to read at the house too which added a kind of soul to the place. There's so much to see in this part of Ireland with many sights just on the doorstep. Inch beach is a fabulous stretch of endless sand with dunes for shelter and a friendly bar/restaurant right on the beach. Killarney has all the bars and bustle of an historical Irish tourist town with Mucross House and the famous Torc waterfall along with stunning mountainous and lakes scenery. The Ring of Kerry is also a good day's exploration through spectacular scenery and the Blasket Island Centre and a trip to the Island to discover an extinct way of life form times past and the wonderful stories of the preservation of this Irish heritage. So much more I could write about this fabulous house, owners and location but all I have to say really is I'd happily and wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful home to anyone wishing to spend some time in Ireland. It literally has everything! |

Superb cottage, we could have moved in on a permanent basis. A well designed family home, maintained to an excellant standard. It was situated in a peaceful location although only minutes from the main road. The views were fantastic overlooking the valley and mountains. The owner was very helpful and gave a good insight into places of interest to see and do within the surrounding area. A deffinite place to revisit. |
