The South East Ireland region

Region steeped in history, it's colourful and varied landscape hides ancient buildings and sights waiting to be uncovered. With excellent fishing, Hillwalking and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits to suit all age groups and every taste.

Kilkenny in the south-east of Ireland is a rural farming county with a beutiful old city with an impressive castle on the river.

Castlecomer

Caisleán an Chumair means "The castle at the confluence of the rivers" of which there are three, the Deen, the Brocagh, and the Clohogue. In 1637 Christopher Wandesford laid out the town of Castlecomer based on the model of Alsinore in Italy, Ireland's first town in stone and mortar, Castlecomer is known for the Deerpark Mines, which produced large amount of anthracite coal until it was closed after 300 years in the late 1960's.

Now offering bars, restaurants, shops, a full golf course and the Discovery Park, a great place to walk around with trees and lakes and a visitor centre showing social and geographical history of the area.
