The Dumfries and Galloway region

The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored.

The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's 'must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries.

Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs.

Castle Douglas

Dumfries and Galloway is a region steeped in history, myth and legend and in many places, is seemingly untouched by the passage of time. Over recent years the region has certainly began to develop a name for itself with regard to its superb walking trails. The Southern Upland Way for example, was the UK's first designated coast to coast walk. Starting at Portpatrick on the south west coast of Dumfries and Galloway it runs for approximately two hundred miles all the way to Cockburnspath on Scotland's east coast. There are of course smaller walks aplenty, many providing simply stunning views over unspoilt countryside and coastline. Castle Douglas is known as Scotland's food town and offers a wonderful mix of food and drink outlets. Lovers of looking out upon a clear night sky should visit the Galloway Forest Park. This covers an enormous 373 square miles and is a wonderful mix of woodland, rolling hills and 250 lochs! It has been recently designated a 'Dark Sky Park- one of only four in the western hemisphere. Holiday visitors are strongly advised to take the time to witness this shimmering blanket of stars- one of the true wonders of the natural world
