Located in the heart of the National Trust for Scotland's Threave Castle and Gardens Estate, the Old Exchange has ground floor accommodation to sleep 4 guests in comfort. With an outlook of soft rolling countryside about 1 mile from the region's "Food Town" Castle Douglas with excellent access to the whole of Dumfries and Galloway.
Ideally suited to active couples or young families as there is fantastic walking coastal paths and forest tracks, but also a myriad of family things to see and do. This region is mainly overlooked by most travellers, so the locals have had to create attractions to bring families here.
The result is really exciting, not only are there wonderful sandy beaches and rocky coves, but also family centres like the Galloway activity centre where without experience children and adults can try sailing, kayaking, Dragon boating, archery, quad biking, climbing and a host of other things.
We also have a great chocolate factory with a focus on children, its the Willy Wonka experience. Cream'o'Galloway makes fabulous ice cream but also has an outdoor play centre of treetop walks, 3D maze, a huge tower that has views across the whole region.
Also my favourite, a young pair of energetic men who own a farm with a big hill, have devised a hundred ways to get from the top to the bottom including the longest zip wire in Europe, space balls where you climb inside and roll down the hill, my sons love that, while I get to try out the Segway (2 wheelers you stand on and tilt forward to move)
That's just a taste of many exciting features for families, however this region has 3 distinct towns,
Castle Douglas is the "Food Town" called such after the many businesses that produce high quality foods, like th 3 butchers selling locally grown free range and often organic meat
Kirkcudbright " Scotland's Artists Town" is famous for a group of artists called the "Scottish Colourists" also the "Glasgow Boys" Kirkcudbright has a quality of light that has drawn artists over many years and is the centre of "The Spring Fling" where once a year all the artists in the region open their doors to the public and show how they do what they do (it's fabulous)
Wigtown "Scotland's Book Town" A town filled with bookshops, catering for specific interests including, children, women, architecture, art. And it is home to Scotland's oldest bookshop.
