Castle Douglas

Carsphairn is the “Gateway to Galloway” from the north. It is a small, picturesque village situated halfway between Castle Douglas and Ayr on the A713 tourist route. Carsphairn is part of the area known as “The Glenkens”, traditionally comprising the parishes of Carsphairn, Dalry, New Galloway and Balmaclellan.

In the village itself there are about 40 houses, a church, a school, a shop, a heritage centre and a village hall. There is an outreach Post Office, held every Thursday morning from 9.30 – 11.30 in Lagwyne Hall.

The wider parish of Carsphairn is set in a bowl between the Rhinns of Kells and the imposing Cairnsmore of Carsphairn, which towers above some of the most remote hills in this area. It covers an area of about 80 square miles and has a population of around 200.

We were a party of four friends. There were four bedrooms over three floors, so the house could sleep 9 people (or even 11 including the sofa bed). However as it was we all had a room each. There were… More
