The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The welcoming climate and stunning scenery of the Dordogne encourage exploration, and the region has many treasures to delight wine connoisseurs, gourmets, artists and activity enthusiasts alike.
The chic bustle of St Emilion only twenty minutes from Shambhala offers stylish boutiques, contemporary fine art and world class restaurants. Also nearby are Saint Seurin de Prats and Pessac. Following the Dordogne and Lot waterways will reward the explorer with many new delights, as charming villages and market towns such as Bergerac, Souillac and Cahors were established through trade along their banks.
Bordeaux is an elegant city filled with architectural delights. The visitor can enjoy the narrow streets of the old town, stunning 18th Century mansion houses, the neoclassical theatre and wide boulevards lined with boutique shops in this diverse and attractive city.
Along the Dordogne are many fine chateaux such as Beynac and Monpazier, mainly built for military action against England during the 100 Years’ War. Each summer only ten minutes from Shambhala a dramatic battle re-enactment is held at Castillon de Bataille. The home of the philosopher Michel Montaigne is only 10 minutes away, and there are fine Gallo-Roman mosaics to be seen in the neighbouring village of Montcaret.
Adults and children alike will be enchanted by the chance to step back in time which the region affords. The pre-historic caves in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Bergerac and the spectacular cave paintings at Lascaux are essential visits and will fire the imagination.
The Castillion la Bataille / St Seurin de Prats area
The traditional French hamlet location is a peaceful centre from which to explore the region, with excellent amenities close by.
The local villages of Pessac has a small supermarket, boulangerie, tabacconist, hair salon and two restaurants. Castillon and Sante Foy both have large supermarkets and there are several markets throughout the week in the surrounding towns which specialise in local produce.
The nearby Chateau Bauduc, favoured by Gordon Ramsay and Rick Stein, is a must for wine connoisseurs and offers a programme of tours and tastings, with private visits by arrangement. Wine tours of the many local vineyards are a wonderful chance to sample world-renowned names. Chateau Monbazillac is at Bergerac and St Emilion, Cahors and others are all nearby, offering a chance to sample outstanding wines on the soil where the grapes are grown.
To accompany the wines are many famous traditional cheeses, truffles, mushrooms, duck and goose delicacies such as foie gras. The wealth of gourmet produce makes this area a paradise for foodies, who will be delighted by the local markets of Castillon, Sante Foy and Libourne. This passion for fine produce is reflected in the many excellent restaurants throughout the region.
Along with boating, swimming and fishing at Shambhala, there is a fantastic kayaking centre in the local village of Pessac. The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking and cycling with views to delight and inspire artists and writers.

A lovely house in a quiet, beautiful position next to the Dordogne river. The owner has decorated the house and its outside spaces with great style and we immediately felt relaxed and at the same time inspired by the decor and ornamentation. There is a large downstairs living room, a bedroom and a decent kitchen and bathroom, and on first floor three good bedrooms and bathroom and loo. Plenty of cupboard and hanging space. Two of the bedrooms have access to a first floor sitting-out area with lovely furniture. All rooms have great views over the courtyard garden or the river. The village is tiny and is dominated by vineyards, apple orchards and the river. We swam in the river on several occasions. There is a British-run cafe within walking distance (which we didn't fancy) but some very good restaurants within a short drive and a brilliant deli over the bridge in Pessac. Easy driving to St Emilion (you must go) and access to the two airports at Bergerac and Bordeaux are less than an hour. We drove down from the UK and back and found it easy going with a stopover. You will want to take back loads of wine so this is the best way to travel! We want to go back, soon. |
