The Tuscany region
The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…
The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its 'Green Lung' is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism.
The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or 'cheese throwing'. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.
For 'townie' days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…

Castiglione di Garfagnana
Set in a perfect location, edged by woodland, and just 800M from the walled village of Castiglione, and within walking distance of a couple of restaurants. This character site, which used to be a tiny hamlet has been lovingly restored, and commands amazing views of the Apuane mountains, with a panorama of the Uomo Morto....Castiglione's most striking attraction is the Medieval bridge built by Spinetta Malaspina in the 13th century. The village is also famous for its well-preserved 13th-century medieval walls with large towersm and also its castle. The views from all parts of the village are breathtaking. Set in the heart of the Garfagnana, distances are as follows: Castiglione - basic facilities 800M and restaurant. Pieve Fosciana - supermarket, good restaurant etc 4km. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana - local market town, famous for its Thursday morning market and with all facilities including train station 7km. Lucca - stunning medieaval walled city 50km. Pisa - 90 mins or so. Florence - say 1 hr 50 mins. Mediaeval town of Barga - half hour. This location is a real hideaway, but convenient for exploring the area....
