Il Mullino, jacuzzi and Wi-Fi
Watermill | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 5
Off the beaten track, this is a beautifully and sympathetically restored water mill retaining a wealth of original features from the original mill as well as solid chestnut beams and original stone floors.
The Water Mill has a welcoming open plan dining kitchen/living area, hand built and restored by craftsmen using local wood and includes a built in dishwasher and fridge.
Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms with lovely views and a bathroom with separate shower.
There is a state of the art external jacuzzi in the small enclosed yard entered from the back door.
The pretty garden is divided into different areas including a picnic area with solid wood table and benches, small pond, hot tub and a small stream running through the mill.
Externally there is also a utility room with freezer and washing machine.
Valbona is a beautiful, traditional medieval mountain village at 673 m asl through which flows the Esarulo river.
In medieval times there was only the mill which served the local area and the Verucchia Castle. Little by little, other buildings sprang up around the mill until a small village grew, complete with little church. Today, it has changed very little although restoration carried out by the 30 or so residents in the last few years have given back to the village its “picture postcard” beauty.
There is very little traffic around which makes the old village and its surroundings interesting and safe for children.
Castiglione, less than 15 minutes drive away, has a variety of local shops for day to day shopping requirements. The medieval market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is a 15 minute drive away and provides all manner of facilities and shops as well as the local hospital and train station on the Pisa airport/Lucca to Aulla line.

The Tuscany region
The area is well known for its excellent value cooking, using the best of local ingredients. A typical set lunch with 4 choices of pasta course, and 4 choices of main course costs only 9 Euros inclusive of bread, wine and coffee. It is possible to have a multi-course traditional Sunday lunch or dinner with ample wine, coffee and liquors for less than 25 Euros.
Garfagnana is the best area in Tuscany for walking. We have links with an outdoor activities company who offer guided walks and climbing, mountain biking, canoeing and world class gorge walking. Local market town with good shops is only 6 miles away.
Castiglione di Garfagnana
The Molino is in the ancient, tiny village of Valbona, in the cool woods of the Garfagnana. Being very peaceful, nature lovers will appreciate the variety of interesting walks around the house.

"The real Tuscany experience... away from tourists"
Il Molino is a beautiful, rustic mill in a very tiny collection of houses, deep in a valley in the Garfagnana region of Italy. There are beautiful walks in the area along a lovely stream, and my daughters loved playing in the tiny mill stream under the house, collecting the many (huge) snails and playing with the (equally huge) butterflies. Il Molino has many of the old mill pieces still in place which adds to its charm.
Very friendly neighbors will bring you fresh eggs from the many chickens kept in coops on the property (just far enough away that you don't hear them). The kitchen has all the modern conveniences disguised behind the faux wood cabinets. The huge dining table in the kitchen, smaller table in the garden, comfortable couch and armchairs offer plenty of seating choices. The master bedroom has a comfortable queen bed, and the second bedroom has both a double and single bed. The hot tub was nice to relax in after a long day of walking. WiFi was free, fast and reliable.
The mill retains a lot of its rustic charm, so expect very thin interior walls, and the second floor hardwood floors are just the planks on the beams. In certain places you can see the lights from downstairs coming through the floor... and all non-whispered conversations can be heard from everywhere else in the villa. Please don't take it as a negative, as we laughed about it more than complained... It was not a problem for us.
You definitely need a car as it is well off the beaten path. The winding "one lane" road into the tiny village is a slow 15 - 20 minute drive to the "main" road... and then another 15 minutes or so to the grocery store. There are a few small towns with local shops and very good local restaurants slightly closer, but nothing on the "one lane" road, so its at least a 20 minute drive for any food or shopping. This is definitely the price you pay for a get away from it all location in the mountains and while I didn't mind the drive, my wife got tired of it very quickly.
Lucca is an hour's drive, Pisa an hour and a half, Florence 2 hours, so it's a good location for doing day trips. The small town of Castiglione di Garfagnana is great for exploring, and the Thursday market in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana was well worth a visit.
If you want a wonderful, quiet, relaxing vacation in the mountains of Tuscany… reserve Il Molino now. You won't regret it.
