The Tuscany region

CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA (HISTORY):

Before the tourism development, Castiglione della Pescaia was a poor fishing village evidenced today by the name Pescaia. The ancient burg of the village sets on the top of Monte Petriccio, the high walls, the towers and the doors of the village were built in the Middle age while the castle, today a private property, in the XV century. In Etruscan era on the nearby plain there was the ancient Prile lake, named Portus Traianus by the Romans. During the centuries, a vast marsh took the place of this lake and was the Granduca Leopoldo, who governed Tuscany region in the 18th century, who drained this area that today is the preserved natural area of Diaccia Botrona. This wet area is the ideal habitat for rare sorts of birds.

The sea along its coast is very clean (awarded with the European Blue Flag since many years) and its bright fine sandy beaches are long and depth. From the top of the village you can admire the gorgeous view of pineta del Tombolo that arrives till cape 'Argentario and the modern harbour, recently restored, every kind of boat can find a place. The beaches of Castiglione and Roccamare are the ideal place to amuse yourself with surf, wind surf and sailing. Not far from Castiglione, the Elba island and the Argentario peninsula are some of the favourite destinations for Divers thanks to the sounding-depths of water

full of fishes, corals and shells.

The countryside is perfect for walking, jogging and horse riding in the green and parfumed mediterranean forest. The pinewood of Castiglione and Roccamare is liked by the joggers and bikers lovers. Riding schools of the area organise horse ridings on the beach and in the countryside. Moreover, the Golf Club of Punta Ala and Il Pelagone are just 15 minutes from Castiglione. Wellness: For a relaxing day in a charming and pleasant place we suggest you to go to the ancient SPA of Saturnia (1 hour and a half by car from Castiglione). Its origins date from the Etruscan era, when the village was called Aurinia; Later the Romans renamed it Saturnia.

GASTRONOMY (FOOD and WINE):

The fruits of Maremma have all the parfumes, colours and flavours of this fascinating and real land. During the numerous seasonal village festivals you will get in touch with Tuscan culinary traditions and enjoy typical food, such as wildboar sausages, slices of goat cheese with honey and marmalades, handmade pasta, olive oil of the hills, fruits and vegetables full

of the sun flavour chestnuts from the wood of Amiata mountains and the famous red wine of Morellino of Scansano.

Of course, there are so many restaurants, inns, pubs and wine bars in the centre of Castiglione, that you will come back to try them all!

TRIPS: Day trips are organized by the local Tourist Office and other Agencies, to discover the 'Maremma', one of the most beautiful and interesting area of Tuscany. From June to September, escursions to Elba , Giglio and Montecristo islands take place daily from the local harbour.

Castiglione Della Pescaia

ART, CULTURE AND HISTORY:

The Maremma is the south part of Tuscan region and its history began 3000 years ago and let us a magnificent artistic heritage.

Your visit can start from the Etruscan and Roman vestiges of Populonia, Vetulonia, Roselle, Cosa and Sovana, and then continue with towers, castles, fortresses and forts dating from the Medieval era and the following centuries during which the noble families of Aldobrandeschi, Medici and Lorena governed this area of Tuscany.

Worth to see the village of Massa Marittima, just 30 minutes by car from Castiglione, with its nice square, the chandelier tower and the Sienese fort, the stunning white marble Cathedral of saint Cerbone and many ancient noble palaces. Worth to visit also GROSSETO and SCARLINO

Maremma is rich of protected natural areas and parks (almost 40.000 hectares), so you can easily get in touch with typical Mediterranean animals, trees and flowers. Among these parks we remind you, (just 30 minutes from Castiglione): the famous Maremma natural park in Marina di Alberese and Carapax (The European Centre of Turtle Safety) in Massa Marittima.

Beautiful Italian cities like Rome (just 200 Kms far away), Florence (135 Kms), Siena (75 Kms) and Pisa (110 Kms) can be visited within 1 day trip.
