Home description
La Corteccia is located in the countryside just 2km from the medieval hilltop village of Panicale, with its idyllic panoramic position and restaurants. Lake Trasimeno, one of the largest lakes in Italy is only a fifteen minute drive. Siena and Assisi on the West and East are a couple of hours away, as are Rome and Florence South and North. Panicale is in fact the Heart of Italy. Chiusi train station, only fifteen km away, is ideal if you want to spend a day in Florence (the train journey is only one hour long!).
The apartment, part of an old farmhouse Borgo Vieniche, is on the first floor and has a private terrace and garden. La Corteccia benefits from a swimming pool which is used uniquely by the families staying in Borgo Vieniche (max 5) .
The apartment itself consists of a kitchen corner, living area with sofa bed and elegant bathroom on the main floor; en suite bedroom and reading area on the mezzanine level.

The Umbria region
In the true heart of Italy, the region is not touched by the sea, and the territory is for one-third mountains and for the rest hills covered with olive trees and vineyards, and acknowledgedly among the most beautiful landscapes in Italy. Rich in waters, being crossed by many rivers and comprising the largest lake in central Italy, Lake Trasimeno. Thanks to the temperate climate, the beautiful landscapes and the religious, cultural and artistic wealth of many cities like Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto & Perugia, tourism is also an important resource.
Castiglione del Lago / Panicale area
Panicale is a common but at the same time a very special town. It is exactly the “common” part of it that makes the town so special for a foreigner. So far, it has been relatively undiscovered by tourists. However, you can find everything there that has made Italy so popular all over the world: history, art, church, good food and wine. But also pagan gods, saints, mighty popes, painters and despotic warlords have left their impact on the town. But what is more important, in Panicale you will meet the local people at the cafés, in the squares, in the shops. You will witness the grey but picturesque everyday life, with the women crossing the square in the morning to make their daily shopping, or the endless discussions of the men in the cafés. Here you will find the genuine Italy with its timeless atmosphere and spontaneous hospitality and friendliness, that will add extra spice to your stay.
The three restaurants offer a quantity of local specialities: home-made pasta, truffle flavoured dishes, and wine from the region. The shops display traditional hand-made products: excellent salami or fresh sausages, hand painted ceramics, embroidered lace. The tourist office organizes daily tours to the theatre, to the Perugino fresco in the San Sebastiano church (one of seven) and to the museums. There are festivals the whole year round: from the grape harvest in September, to the chestnut and olive harvest in October-November, from the several Easter celebrations as the procession around the town on Good Friday night with torches and candles or the cheese tournament – il ruzzolone- on Easter Sunday or Monday, where everybody is invited to take part.
How to get there
You can fly into Rome or ideally Perugia. If you fly into Rome you can either rent a car at the airport or take the bus from the airport to Roma Termini, the main train station and from here take a train to Chiusi, which is a one hour train ride. I will be happy to supply you with train timetables. From Chiusi there is a Hertz hire a car place right opposite the train station. From Perugia airport you really need to hire a car directly at the airport. Arriving from Rome you need to take the A1 in direction of Florence and exit at Chiusi-Chianciano (at this point call to say you are arriving), go towards Chiusi, then towards Castiglione del Lago. Take the second exit for Panicale. From this exit to Panicale there are approx 4 km.
Coming from Perugia you take the Super strada in direction Siena (the main semi motorway) and come off at Magione. From Magione you follow the signs to Chiusi, passing through the towns of Sant'arcangelo and then Panicarola, then follow the signs for Panicale. When you leave the superstrada call.
