Home description

Podere I Monelli is a fantastic old estate on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, in an area virtually unknown to tourists. There are 4 vacation apartments available to let in all. The restoration of the estate was undertaken with great care, making sure every element of the structure was preserved. The property boasts traditional Umbrian features such as the original wooden beams and fireplaces. All of the apartments are furnished with luxuriously tasteful antique furniture.

The train station at Terontola is 10 minutes away by car from Podere Monelli. From here trains leave hourly for Rome and Florence and offer a quick, safe, comfortable and inexpensive mode of transport.

Lago Trasimeno is very close by and is home to Italy’s 4th largest lake. Hot springs, walking and bicycle trails, village festivals, concerts, open-air theatrical productions, cafés, and traditional Italian restaurants all provide a great source of entertainment.

The vast grounds include a swimming pool, large garden and a shaded parking area. There is also an outdoor operational pizza oven. The view from here includes Montepulciano and Monte Amiata.

Petrignano del Lago is the closest village situated approximately 1 km away where there is a shop, an excellent restaurant, a bar and hairdresser.

In the neighbouring village of Pozzuolo there is a bank, post office, pharmacy and a bakery amongst other things. There is much to see in the surrounding regions of Tuscany and Umbria and all are easily accessible and all close by

The Umbria region

This secret Umbrian idyll is still very much unspoilt and offers excellent transport links to many of the delightful towns and Cities of the region. The location of Lago Trasimeno is excellent as surrounding area offers easy access to some of the most delightful places in Italy; Perugia (40 mins), Assisi (50 mins), Siena (1 hr), Arezzo (45 mins), Cortona (20 mins), Florence (1 Hr), Pisa (1 ¾ hrs) and Rome (2 ½ hrs).

Being large but shallow, Lake Trasimeno (at 128 square kilometres, the fourth largest lake in Italy) is a haven for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The lake is surrounded by a flat, alluvial plain, then a ring of gentle hills, where woodland alternatives with fields of sunflowers, maize, vineyards and olive groves. In fact, the economy of the area depends largely on agriculture, together with the local’s love of craftwork, notably the famous lace of Isola Maggiore, ceramics and articles in copper and wrought iron.

Castiglione del Lago / Pozzuolo area

The Trasimeno area is part of Umbria, but culturally and geographically it straddles both Umbria and Southern Tuscany. It contains features of both, being an area where the borders between the two regions is intriguingly blurred, in a language and landscape as well as in the flavours of its cuisine and its traditions. Umbria is located in the exact centre of Italy, at a point which since ancient times has been a meeting point for routes for travellers from central Italy and northern Europe heading for Rome.

The area is not a busy transit area, however but the kind of place that people stumble upon by chance, then visit regularly. There is no need to stumble across it, though, as now you have your chance to discover this magical region.
