Home description

Located within close proximity of Castiglione del Lago, in Umbria lies the village of Badia. In a framework made of old olive trees and immerged in the green Umbrian countryside, we discover Badia; a small village, an oasis of peace and tranquillity with a population of approximately 40. It is here that Renata and Marco have decided to restructure this complex that has become the splendid Holiday House Casolare.

Casolare is a large house with its own garden, barbecue, pizza oven, garage and laundry room. You will enjoy the landscape and quickly feel at home and integrated into the village life. Within a 5 minute walk there here is a bar and a small shop, as well as a large pool on site.

Casolare is a farmers cottage dating back to the end of the 19th century, with a garden area of 3.000 square meters lined with cypresses and olive trees. The old oven still working and a large well equipped area in the garden with tables and chairs invites you to have a barbecue and to taste the local produce of the region.

Casolare has 4 bedrooms that cater for between 10 and 12 persons and the house is only available to let as a whole. The bedrooms offer wrought iron beds, beautiful antique chest of draws, bureaus and 19th century chestnut beams. Two of the bedrooms are family rooms and have both a double and a single bed. The 3rd bedroom is a double bedroom with double bed and the fourth is a twin. Two of the three bathrooms are en-suite and the third has a shower.

The kitchen, which leads out onto the loggia, has a fireplace. The loggia with its panoramic views allows you to eat at the open air during the summer period and to watch the sun set over a bottle of one of the regional wines. The kitchen is excellently well equipped with oven, dishwasher, pots and pans and high quality crockery and a washing machine, offering you all that you need during your stay.

A nice “fratino” table measuring three meters allows you to eat in comfort in the dining area. At the long wooden table in the dining room, you can enjoy the exquisite Umbrian food and wines. The house is very warming and furnished in a traditional Italian rustic style.

The living area offers a relaxing environment with a fire place, settees and 2 double sofa beds meaning that the house can accommodate up to 10/12 persons if required. The sofa beds are of a good quality and offer a comfortable nights sleep.

You can relax undisturbed in the large garden behind the house, where there is also an old working pizza oven and a barbecue for evening parties.

The swimming pool here is shared with Borgio Badia, Borgo Badia is another property on the grounds which is some distance away. The large swimming pool measures 7 x 15 metres and offers wonderful views of the surrounding patchwork valleys and hill sides.

Prices include weekly supply of bed and bathroom linen (excluding bath towels), hot & cold water, gas and final cleaning. Heating during the winter period is not included and is payable directly to the owner.

The owners of Casolare have an established arrangement with the new Riding school in Castiglione del Lago which is located 8 Km away as well as an agrangement with the owners of the local tennis courts, located only 2 km from the property. Please feel free to ask us for any additional information regarding these services.

For who love tradition and ceramics, Casolare organises guided visits to the craft workshops where the traditional antique working techniques are still used and have created a world reputation in the city of Deruta.

Castiglione del Lago will act as your main shopping centre and is one of the most beautiful medieval towns by the lake. City gates and walls dating back to the middle ages surround the picturesque old town, which includes a piazza, a fountain, and a castle. There are many restaurants to choose from and the town's exquisite shops have much to offer. There are many smaller shops, selling typical products from the region and 3 large supermarkets. There are excellent transport links from the train station where there are regular services to the main towns and cities of Italy.

Excursions to destinations in Umbria and the Tuscany are quickly reached. The information centre in Castiglione del Lago provides numerous brochures and information about the sights and events in the area.

Be sure and visit cities such as Chiusi, Paciano, Cortona, Montepulciano, Montalcino (Sant´Antimo, Gregorian chants) Castiglione del Lago, Passignano del Lago, Perugia, Assisi, and Orvieto.

A comfortable, inexpensive train ride is all that separates you from Chiusi, Terontola, Rome, Florence or Orvieto. Buy regional goods in the village or the surrounding area. Ask for tips about restaurants, - the Umbrian cuisine is recognized as the best in Italy.

We recommend early booking of this property to avoid disappointment. We are happy to reserve the property obligation free for up to 7 days if required. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for any further information.

The Umbria region

This secret Umbrian idyll is still very much unspoilt and offers excellent transport links to many of the delightful towns and Cities of the region. The location of Lago Trasimeno is excellent as surrounding area offers easy access to some of the most delightful places in Italy; Perugia (40 mins), Assisi (50 mins), Siena (1 hr), Arezzo (45 mins), Cortona (20 mins), Florence (1 Hr), Pisa (1 ¾ hrs) and Rome (2 ½ hrs).

Being large but shallow, Lake Trasimeno (at 128 square kilometres, the fourth largest lake in Italy) is a haven for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The lake is surrounded by a flat, alluvial plain, then a ring of gentle hills, where woodland alternatives with fields of sunflowers, maize, vineyards and olive groves. In fact, the economy of the area depends largely on agriculture, together with the local’s love of craftwork, notably the famous lace of Isola Maggiore, ceramics and articles in copper and wrought iron.

Castiglione del Lago / Badia area

The Trasimeno area is part of Umbria, but culturally and geographically it straddles both Umbria and Southern Tuscany. It contains features of both, being an area where the borders between the two regions is intriguingly blurred, in a language and landscape as well as in the flavours of its cuisine and its traditions. Umbria is located in the exact centre of Italy, at a point which since ancient times has been a meeting point for routes for travellers from central Italy and northern Europe heading for Rome.

The area is not a busy transit area, however but the kind of place that people stumble upon by chance, then visit regularly. There is no need to stumble across it, though, as now you have your chance to discover this magical region.
