The Umbria region
Umbria is known as the 'green heart of Italy' (il cuor verde d'Italia) due to its central position and vast woodlands. The rolling hills and fertile plains are dotted with picturesque towns, castles and monasteries rich in history and culture - Umbria is well known for its medieval hill-top towns. Perugia is the capital of Umbria and contains some of the most beautiful art and architecture in the province with a plethora of beautiful churches and an important Etruscan museum.
All year round in Umbria there are feast days, religious celebrations and pagan festivals linked to the farming year or to popular and historical traditions of the ancient communes. There are two main Jazz Festivals: Umbria Jazz takes place in the summer (July) in Perugia and Umbria Jazz Winter at the end of December/beginning of January in Orvieto. Many other towns have local jazz events also.
Castiglione del Lago / Pozzuolo area
Lake Trasimeno is the fourth largest lake in Italy and sits near the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Castiglione del Lago, on the western edge of the lake, is the largest town around it. Pozzuolo and Nardelli (where our home is situated) are approximately 7km further west. Lake Trasimeno is a wonderful nature reserve, protected by its Natural Park status. The lake is very shallow and is ideal for bathing with 8 well-kept beaches. There are three islands on the Lake the largest of which is Isola Maggiore. You can take boat trips to Isola Maggiore and Isola Polvese (the third island, Minore, is private). There are many walking/hiking, and mountain-biking trails throughout the area offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
The area around Lake Trasimeno is an excellent base and offers easy access to some of the most beautiful places in Umbria and Tuscany: Cortona (20 mins) and Chiusi (25 mins) Perugia (45 mins) and Assisi (55 mins) Siena (70 mins) and Florence (1¼ hours) Arezzo (45 mins) Pisa (2 hrs) and Rome (2 hrs) Orvieto (50 mins)
