About this location
The Tuscany region
Tuscany is located in central Italy and it is famous for both its beautiful and varied landscape and artistic heritage. Medieval villages, historical towns and castles, country abbeys and monasteries abound and then of course there is Florence, birthplace of Michelangelo, the city famous for its beautiful architecture and wonderful museums and art galleries. Tuscany is also famous for its many spas: Montecatini, Saturnia, Montepulciano, Monsummano and Bagno Vignoni, which offer relaxing holidays thanks to their thermal waters and well-equipped facilities for all types of treatments.
Val d'Orcia's uniqueness was recognized by UNESCO in 2004 when they included it in the World Cultural Landscape list. It is a pleasing mix of rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, beautiful country houses and charming hilltop villages. It has inspired artists through the ages with its many castles and abbeys, small villages and hamlets, the ever present cypress trees lining roads leading up to farmhouses dotted through the valley.
Val d'Orcia is the home to jewels such as Pienza (the ideal city) a unique Renaissance monument designed by the great humanist Pope Pius II; Castiglione d'Orcia with its wonderful fortress; Abbadia S. Salvatore and its ancient Benedictine Abbey, the Romanesque Abbadia di Sant' Antimo, one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture; Radicofani with its imposing castle tower looming over the valley below; and the walled medieval city of Montalcino, with its 14th century fortress offering breathtaking views over the valley. And then there are the spa towns of Bagno Vignoni and Bagni di San Filippo, not to be missed, ideal places to relax and unwind.
Val d'Orcia is not only known for its great natural and architectonic beauty but also for some of the finest Italian wines, Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso Orcia to name but two and local food products such as olive oil, mushrooms, truffles, game and of course the famous Pienza pecorino cheese.
