The Tuscany / Arezzo Province region
Ask any Italian and they will tell you that Tuscany is the Jewell of Italy. It is picture perfect wherever you go. Full of culture and art - just about around any street corner - and, then there are the more modern Tuscan temples of shopping - Outlets of Prada, Gucci and so on are perfect for a rainy day - or any other! Arezzo is famous for wine, gold, antiques and of course fashion.
There are many other places to eep you busy and interested - the famous towns of Montpulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona and more are all within drivings distance as the lovely town of Assisi.
It is easy to do nothing but relax here. However, we can organise many activities for our guests including cooking lessons, wine tasting and tours, truffle hunts, art classes and so on.
There are festivals throughout the year - in June, Castiglion offers its own horse Pallio, in April it has "The Passion" performed live. There are food festivals just about every week and there are many fresh produce markets around the various towns. In Arezzo there is the famous Jousting competition, and during mid September, you can watch to wine harvest and see the process to make wine. From mid October through to December, you can watch - help - harvest the olives and see these pressed in to the special Tuscan olive oil.
The closest beach is at Lake Tresimeno, about 30 minutes from here. If you would like to visit Italy's seaside towns - we are in the middle of boh the Med and Adriatic coast lines - about 2 hours in either direction!
Florence is also an easy day out - with trains from the local station - fastest about 1 hour 5 mins.
The Castiglion Fiorentino area
Castiglion Fiorentino lies at the centre of a triangle formed by important cities such as Florence, Siena and Perugia. Castiglion Fiorentino, originally an Etruscan settlement and later an old medieval village, lies close to the famous Valdichiana and Cortona.
Local activities include Tennis - and a huge sports center. There are about 37 cycle tracks around the valley and you can also rent a scooter from the town. Golf - a 9 hole course is about 24kms
The tower of the ancient castle dominates the town. This charismatic town has much to offer any visitor including its beautiful medieval walls, beautiful churches, art treasures and numerous Renaissance structures - e.g. the Loggia by Vasari at the Piazza del Municipio.
Castiglion also has many festivals throughout the year including the famous Palio dei Rioni” (a horse race around the town – similar to the festival in Siena) which includes a colourful and energetic display of the ancient custom of flag-waving - dating back to the 13th century. Both of which are extraordinary shows not to be missed.

Whenever we plan a vacation we have following criteria in mind: comfortable, clean housing, privacy, far from all noise, nice view, close to cultural highlights, pleasant climate, swimming facility. Never before could we give such high marks to all these criteria than when we stayed in La Luna of Borgo Tranquilitta. Beautiful, old, very characteristic and clean cottage. Excellent beds. Splendid view. 'Heavenly' silence. Maximum privacy. Lovely swimming pool. So happy were we with this accommodation, that we decided now and then not to go to one of the museum-like Tuscan cities, but to stay 'at home'. It is probably the first time in our life that we consider to go back to a place where we stayed before. La Luna has stolen our hearts. Response: Greetings Tinus and Jeanne It seems a while ago now, but happy memories of meeting the two of you and our many conversations. We are so very pleased that your 8 nights at Il Borgo recharged your batteries and gave you so much pleasure. We really do look forward to seeing you both again. THis coming year, the owners are planning many improvements which should make your return even more enjoyable. Our very best wishes to you both. |
