The Tuscany region
Tuscany is an area in Central Italy. Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition and is very well known for its wines-most famously Chianti! Tuscany is also known for its artists and great paintings and sculptures, not to mention the architectural masterpieces.
There are many reasons to visit Tuscany from the beautiful countryside, fine wine and cuisine, mountain paths for walking and cycling, the fine art and to learn the language!
Tuscany is a great destination for shopping in Italy. The larger cities for shopping are Siena and Florence with boutiques and brand name shops. The villages often focus on the weekly markets with local craftsmen who host workshops.
You will find a good choice of restaurants which offer local cuisine in Castiglion Fiorentino. An ideal base for touring both Tuscany & Umbria. From the local train station (4 kms) there are trains to Florence, Rome, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi.
The town of Castiglion Fiorentino of Roman origin, Known from 1014 as Castiglione aretino until, in 1384, when Florence took over the Aretin Republic, it became "Fiorentino".
Its medieval girdle of walls, dominated by Cassero fortress, remain intact. The historic centre consists entirely of dignified maisons, both sacred and secular, among which the most notable are the Gothic church of S. Francesco, the Collegiate church and the Gesù church, all of them rich in art works of high value.
In the 16th-century Palazzo Comunale there is a rich library with paintings, tablets and priceless goldwork from the 12th to 15th centuries. A short distance beyond the walls is the church of Consolation (Renaissance) of octagonal plan.
