The Sicily region

The archaeological site of Selinunte is made from the Acropolis, the ancient city, the sanctuary of Malophoros and necropolis. Acropolis and in the east you can visit a large area with the remains of at least eight Greek temples, and other buildings dedicated to religion. It was the only Greek city to decorate their temples with the sculptures called metopes. Some of these, found, are kept in the Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum of Palermo. In the eastern part of the Acropolis you can see a massive wall, which is a stretch of the city walls. It actually had a dual role, both defensive and containment of a massive mound able to broaden the sacred terrace. The construction of the temples, in the second half of the sixth century BC, was reduced by the sacred area of the acropolis.

Around Selinunte were found also several necropolis, by clandestine diggers. From various eras, these cemeteries, however, extend to five kilometers from the town of Selinunte. This suggests that they could belong to another city, unknown.

About a kilometer from the Acropolis, beyond the river Modione (Selinus), you can see a series of sanctuaries without colonnade. And 'the area of ??the Sanctuary of Malophoros, where numerous altars probably overlooked the then navigable river. The peripheral location of the sanctuaries makes you think it was for non-Greek cults, designed to facilitate relationships and bring together, within the colony, people of mixed ethnicity.

The Mediterranean climate affects the entire southern part of Europe and especially the coast. The Mediterranean is a closed sea with a single shallow mouth of the Atlantic Ocean (the Straits of Gibraltar), and an artificial one on the Red Sea (the Suez Canal). It has an average temperature of its waters higher ocean, higher salinity and leads to its coast a much lower amount of precipitation in the oceanic. The most typical features are the mild temperatures and little rain, concentrated usually in the winter season. The summer season is hot and dry. The heat is not scorching because mitigated by sea breezes that blow along the coast
