The Tuscany / Lucca Province region
The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…
The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism. The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.
For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…This is Olde Worlde Italy.
The Castelnuovo di Garfagnana / Cerretoli area
Excellent family run restaurant in nearby village (10 min walk) with outdoor eating terrace.
The main market town of the Garfagnana, Castelnuovo, is 7 minutes away by car. This has good facilities including a tourist information office, small supermarkets, a variety of other shops and a proper wine ‘bottega’.
Recommended full day trips include Pisa, Florence, the beach (on the Italian Riviera) and the Cinque Terra World Heritage site.
Also easily accessible by rail from Castelnuovo.

Cerretoli is 20 minutes from Barga (16km). Lucca is 50km away and the journey to Pisa airport (72km) takes less than 1½ hours hours.

Rural / countryside retreats

Booked our villa using Tuscan Retreats, which was so easy and very helpful.
On arriving at villa we were met with the owners who handed over the property keys and took us on a tour of the villa, showing us the rooms and explaining how everything worked.
Our initial reaction to the villa was breathtaking beautiful with stunning views and extremely quiet. Our first view didn't change during our week stay at the property, none of us wanted to leave at the end.
Pool was great size for us which was two adults and two children.
The property was really spacious with plenty of room and different location to relax in.
Roof terrace was great for evenings relaxing watching the sunset and moon rise each evening.
Local amenities were close enough to travel too.
Car is required due to location of property in mountains.
