The Tuscany region

The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…

The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism.

The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…

The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!

The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.

For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…

This is Olde Worlde Italy

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

The villa is conveniently situated within walking distance of restaurants and shops, and is also less than a 5 minute drive from the bustling market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, with its bars, restaurants, shops, famous Thursday morning market, and train station for easy exploring.

Castelnuovo itself is 45 mins from the walled Mediaeval City of Lucca; 15 minutes from the beautiful town of Barga, 1 hr 20 mins from Pisa, 1 hr 40 mins from Florence, and 1 hour over the mountains to the coast.

"fantastic views but shame about the damp bedrooms"

Whilst the gardens and scenery are absolutely lovely, this is certainly not a newly renovated property. The house is in need of a complete refurbishment. The bedrooms which are situated on the lower f… More

Thank you for your review. I am sorry you felt the house to be damp. We have successfully rented this house for some time and have never had comments about damp, or problems with the bathrooms (which whenever we have seen them have been pristine). The ground floor of the house is built into the earth which makes the bedrooms and bathrooms beautifully cool in the heat and which is part of their appeal, with guests returning regularly in the hot weather. Unfortunately this stay has coincided with the worst weather we have had in the summer for 90 years and in truth no Tuscan Country house is designed for rainy conditions but to keep in the cool air. This means that if there are lots of people staying in a house, especially one built into the ground, it is essential bathroom windows are kept open and that air is permitted to circulate in the house. Ifthe problem had been mentioned to the owners, who are incredibly personable and great hosts they would have provided a dehumidifier to deal with this unusual weather and also they would have been very happy to come and provide extra bathroom cleaning. We are glad that the area and the views appealed despite the difficult climate that week!
