The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Aude Cathar Country, a historic destination in South West France. The Cathar trail stretches over 200km, running from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees, across dramatic landscape, with far reaching views across to the mountains, valleys and sea, from a variety of 11th-13th century Cathar Castles and Abbeys. Only 45minutes away from 'Le Grand Verger', in the UNESCO World Heritage site is the Medieval City of Carcassonne, where you will be able to visit the most impressive preserved Cathar Castle and the St Nazaire Basilica. Within the City walls of this inhabited historic medieval site, you will find the Counts' Castle, museums, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. Closer to 'Le Grand Verger' are the remains of the Saissac Castle and if you wish to follow the trail further afield many more remains of Cather Castles can be reached and visited, such as Peyrepertuse Castle, Montségur, etc., walking shoes recommended.

The Languedoc Region is also famous for it's variety of robust rich wines found in the areas of: Corbière, Fitou, Minervois, Cabardes, Malepere, etc., where there are many cellars to visit and wine tastings available for those who are interested.

Apart from wine, the region is also famous for it's authentic cuisine. Castelnaudary the home of the 'Cassoulet', traditionally made with Lingolet Beans, confit of duck and/or goose, strips of pork rib, Toulouse sausage and baked for several hours until a crust has formed and been cracked seven times. The Narbonne region is famous for: Oysters, Mussels, Eels, Mediterranean Fish, Honey and Cheese. The Corbières/ Minervois regions produce Apples, lucques olives, olive oil, Marseillette rice, goats' and ewes' milk, game and wild boar. The 'Montagne Noir' region specialities include: wild mushrooms, truffle, lamb and pork charcuterie, cheese, asparagus, sweet chestnuts and honey. And all over the Aude Region you will find all sorts of interesting places to visit all with their own local produce.

The Canal du Midi, another UNESCO World Heritage site, is just 200 metres from 'Le Grand Verger', was built in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. It was originally constructed to enable the movement of produce and cargo via horse drawn barges. Now it offers a tourist pursuit for pleasure boats, hotel barges, on the water and walking, cycling, fishing along the towpath.

Lac de la Ganguise, which is located to the west of Castelnaudary, offers a playground for those who enjoy water sport activities. The Sailing Cub and Sailing School providing sailing, wind surfing courses.
