Le Rouquet is in the old part of Castelnaud la Chapelle. The picturesque village runs down the hillside from the medieval castle to the River Dordogne and the property lies midway between the two. It is built in the local style of honey coloured stone, has a sunny south facing aspect and wonderful views across the valley from the windows and the terrace. Le Rouquet has been renovated to form two independant holiday gites which can be rented separately or together at a discount.
The garden apartment is light and airy and sleeps up to 4 people in comfort. It consists of a large fully equipped kitchen with table and chairs if you do not want to eat outside on the terrace. The beautiful sitting room has stone walls and oak beam features and the sofa converts into a King size bed. Lovely stone steps lead up from the sitting room to the bedroom which is prettily decorated and has a double bed, cupboard and chest of drawers and has a lovely view over the valley. It also benefits from its own outside door. The modern tiled bathroom has a large shower and heated towel rail which ensures it is always comfortably warm and towels are dry.

The king size sofa bed is extremely easy to use and very comfortable and there is ample independent hanging and drawer space for anyone using it.

The apartment shares access to the gravelled garden and paved terrace with the Balcony apartment. The garden is a real sun trap being sheltered by a hedge but there is shade if you need it from the covered area on the terrace. The flower beds are filled with shrubs, roses and aromatic herbs. The garden is an ideal place to enjoy the sun or in which to have a barbecue. Loungers are provided together with a table and chairs.
Conditions
The Garden apartment can be booked together with the Balcony apartment in which case a discount of 10% will be given. Payment may be made in either Sterling or in Euros.
All prices include linens and electricity. There is an additional charge of 50 Euros per apartment, payable locally to our housekeeper upon your arrival, to cover the cost of laundry and cleaning the apartment. A refundable Security Deposit of £300/400 Euros per apartment will be required to cover any losses or accidental damage.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region


The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful regions of France with its mix of pretty riverside villages, wooded valleys and castles dating back to medieval times. There are also many caves some with prehistoric paintings.
The Perigord Noir, as it is called in France, is easily accessible from the UK by either air or car. It is famous for its cuisine with local specilaities including duck, walnuts and truffles and no meal is complete without some of the excellent local wine.
The weather is warmer than the UK. Spring starts early with lots of blue sunny skies in the summer and the autumn stretches well into October.
The Castelnaud la Chapelle area
Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty medieval villages and castles to explore and was on the front line during the 100 years war between the English and the French. Nearby Sarlat,La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding examples of villages with beautiful medieval architecture and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include the colourful markets selling local produce, formal gardens and the many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings.
Our favourites are:-
-the garden at Marqueyssac with its unique style of topiary and marvellous views over the Dordogne valley and across to Castelnaud - we like to walk there from Le Rouquet to give the car a rest;
-the walled village of Domme with its fortified gateways into the town and the views over the river and the countryside below;
-the Saturday market at Sarlat with its hustle and bustle and local gourmet specialities (the architecture of the old town is exceptional with many alleyways and cafes in secluded spots);
-the bastide towns, including Monpazier (great market) and Villereal (there is an interesting self guided tour of the historic village);
-to stroll along the waterfront of La Roque Gageac and go to the troglodytic caves followed by a lazy meal looking over at the river; and finally
-no visit is complete without a canoe trip down the river which can be arranged from Castelnaud (you can choose how far you want to be taken upriver and then it is an easy paddle with the river doing most of the work and the chance to take a break at one of the riverside rest stops for refreshment and a swim).
There are also many well marked walks through the wooded countryside around Castelnaud for the more energetic (maps are provided in the apartment). On a hot day why not walk down to the river and enjoy a picnic on the grassy bank in the shade of the trees and cool off with a swim.
