The Veneto region

Veneto is bordered to the south by the Adriatic, with its beaches and ports, and provides a contrast with the area’s gently rolling countryside, the vast stretch of Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) on the west, flanked by lemon and olive groves, and the many attractive resorts and ancient towns throughout the region.

From the rocky foothills of the Dolomites to the fertile valleys of the Po River, Veneto has a diverse geography that makes it a fascinating area to discover.

Venice, the city of lagoons, is a city we have all traveled to, if only in our imagination! Venice is truly an eclectic combination of pleasures. Celebrated the world over for its splendid and varied architecture, home of elegant shops and cafés, and the famous Carnevale, Venice is one of the few cities in the world that can be described as unique.

Castello, Venice

Castello is the largest of the six sestieri of Venice, Italy. The district grew up from the thirteenth century around a naval dockyard on what was originally the Isole Gemini, although there had been small settlements of the islands of San Pietro di Castello (for which the sestiere is named), also called Isola d'Olivolo, since at least the eighth century.

The district became divided between the Arsenale, then the largest naval complex in Europe, and the monasteries in the north of the quarter. It was later altered by Napoleon, who planned what are now the Bienniale Gardens, and still more recently the island of Sant' Elena has been created, and land drained at other extremities of the quarter.

Other attractions in Castello include the Scuola di San Marco, the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Scuola of San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, the church of San Giorgio dei Greci, the Campo Santa Maria Formosa, the Church of La Pietà and the Church of San Zaccaria.

International art exhibition held in the Castello district of Venice every two years and juried by an international committee. It was founded in 1895 as the International Exhibition of Art of the City of Venice to promote “the most noble activities of the modern spirit without distinction of country.” The first Biennale, which achieved worldwide prestige, included artists from 16 nations; the committee included Edward Burne-Jones, Gustave Moreau, and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. After World War II it became the leading showplace for the international avant-garde. Usually held in the summer months, it attracts many tourists and visitors.
