The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Aquitaine region is sunny and hot in the summer with the same temperatures on average as Provence but without the Mistral wind. We have the benefit of the Pyrenees mountains for skiing in the winter and walking holidays in the summer. The Atlantic coast line stretches from Hendaye (Biarritz) right up the coast past La Rochelle to the west and both of these are two hours drive from Mestre Vidal. There are several large historical towns to visit including Toulouse, Bordeaux, Agen, Auch, Montauban and Perigueux. The countryside is varied and includes famous vineyards towards Bordeaux, fruit orchards including the famous Agen Prunes in the local area, as well as many beautiful perched bastide villages and Romanesque churches dating back to the 12th Century. Another speciality of the region are the thermal and thalassotherapie stations scattered throughout the region and along the coast and in the Pyrenees, with the nearest at Casteljaloux - about one hour's drive away. Many of these do special offers for overnight stays with full use of the heated thermal pools, saunas, hammans and jacussis for around 40 euros each with massage, mud and hot stone treatments at very good prices.

Castella

Situated in a quiet country area on the plateau between the Lot and Garonne rivers with easy access to Villeneuve sur Lot and Agen (both 15 minutes drive), and local town/villages of Laroque Timbaut (8kms), La Croix Blanche (4kms) and St Antoine de Facalba (3kms). Historical perched villages and bastides, museums, chateaux and Romanesque churches, tourist maps and brochures available. During the summer evening markets.

Lot & Garonne is famous for its walking maps (over 350 available from the website Rando 47). The owner has downloaded, printed off and translated the ones in the local area. Archaeological/historical tours can be arranged as the region has a history going back to pre-historic times, the Romans (Sanctuary site of Eysses is a current dig site by the University of Toulouse), the Albigensian Crusades (Simon de Montfort), 100 years and Religious Wars as well as links to the Kings and Queens of England - Richard the Lionheart, Eleanor of Aquitaine etc.

For children - within five minutes of the property - Z'animoland and park, underground caves and caverns of Grottes of Fontirous and Lastournelles. Within half hour, fishing lakes, boating and canoes on the rivers, swimming pool of Malbentre in Villeneuve sur Lot., Walibi theme park in Agen.

The scenery is undulating, with valleys and rivers, farmland and woodland with pretty historical towns and villages within short distances so that you never get the feeling that you are out in the back of beyond, but always within reach of somewhere to stop and have lunch or a nice drink of the local wine in a cafe/bar watching the world go by or to wander round one of the many local produce markets in the region. Beauville and several other villages do night markets during the summer with music and animation.
