The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region
It bills itself as "the other south of France", but those who come to Aquitaine will be astounded by the richness and diversity of its geography. The coastline of the Atlantic coast is the dominant physical feature of this vast region, where you'll be able to discover Bordeaux, Périgord, the Basque Country, the Pyrénées and Europe's largest forest (The Landes Forest) among other things.
Let's start with the pristine beaches of Aquitaine: they are the only ones in France where surfing is possible - in fact, that's where the best surfing is available for the whole of Europe! The sand dunes, including the Dune du Pyla, are the highest in Europe. The Bay of Arcachon is home to a beach resort that became popular in the 19th century, and is very lively in the summer.
The Bordelais is a 1000 square km area around the city of Bordeaux and is, along with Burgundy, France's largest wine-producing region (producing some 870 million bottles of red, white and rosé wines in 1998). Bordeaux has over 5,000 chateaux (not necessarily royal or palatial residences, but properties where grapes are raised and wine produced). Bordelais offers a quiet retreat, and its flat layout is ideal for golf courses, some of the best in France being located there.
Aquitaine's capital, Bordeaux is a thriving port city on the Garonne River with beautiful 18th-century mansions and architecture, including its Grand Theatre by architect Victor Louis, excellent shopping and numerous cultural events, such as the traditional May Music Festival.
Bordeaux is particularly well known for its surrounding wine-growing region. The vineyards of Bordeaux with their Margaux, Médoc, Sauternes and St. Emilion wines are leaders in their fields in an area where many other excellent wines are produced. Most chateaux open their doors to allow visits to their cellars and wine tastings.
The varied Aquitaine region includes not only the prehistoric caves, villages and rolling river valleys of the Dordogne and the Bordeaux vineyards, but also the rocky Pyrénées mountain chain, the Basque country with its beautiful beaches, excellent surfing and picturesque fishing villages, the flat forest land of the Landes and the medieval castles and villages in Lot-et-Garonne.
Remember this is a region of seafood – fresh and cheap in every market for miles inland – and around Bordeaux, some of the world's top vineyards!
Casteljaloux area
There are many activities and places of historical interest locally and the chateau is conveniently located for exploring the country side of the Lot-et-Garonne as well as the Dordogne. And of course, the region is a world famous wine region. Bordeaux & St Emilion for example are just down the road.
Casteljaloux is 8kms away and has all the necessary supermarkets, shops, a post office, restaurants, and some great local markets.
For the active there are great local golf courses, a riding club, tennis is only 3km away and there is a Spa 10km away from the Chateau de Bajac.
