Surrounded by beautiful countryside with panoramic views across fields and woodland to distant mountains, Laguscello is a recently restored 18th century farmhouse and cottage with a fabulous pool, in an idyllic and peaceful location.
Laguscello offers really flexible luxury accommodation options for friends or families staying together: 1 The farmhouse can be rented on its own to sleep 8-10 in four huge ensuite bedrooms. 2. Those renting the farmhouse from May to November can also opt - if they wish - to rent the self-contained Little House, with accommodation for 4 more. 3 In winter, the farmhouse is closed, but the Little House can be rented as a cosy bolt hole for up to 4.
Without a building in sight, Laguscello provides seclusion without isolation. It stands in a secure private garden with 12m x 8m pool, lawns and flower beds with shady terraces, outdoor dining and original pizza oven - which guests can use. It is just 15 minutes from lovely Lake Bolsena and the medieval town of Orvieto and an easy day trip to Rome, Florence, Siena and within easy reach for outings to all the Umbrian and Tuscan 'must-sees'. The farmhouse is very spacious with original features, high beamed ceilings, clean white walls, locally hand-made cotto floor tiles and a stylish mix of contemporary and antique furnishings. It has a stunning roof-to-floor entrance hall and massive 50 foot kitchen and dining room - with a huge table made by a local carpenter taking pride of place. This style is mirrored in the charming Little House, occupying one end of the farmhouse but with its own entrance, which also retains its original features - it dates from 1924. Inside is a simple but pretty and fully-equipped kitchen, lounge, shared bathroom and two bedrooms which both have their own access onto a large first floor terrace with superb panoramic views on three sides.

There is an instant wow factor on opening the front door of Laguscello's farmhouse and stepping into a towering floor-to-roof hall with a ceiling of sweet chestnut beams soaring high above. An original arch on one side opens directly into a lounge, with comfortable leather sofas, satellite TV and DVD player. To the right is a games room with table tennis and table football. Ahead is a massive kitchen which stretches the length of the house. The 'working' end has contemporary quality fittings, topped with local stone and an island unit with stools on one side. A huge dining table made especially for Laguscello by Castel Giorgio's carpenter, seats 12 comfortably. It stretches towards a cosy seating area in front of an open fire, with an island unit and stools providing a focal point. There is a separate, fully equipped utility room with large fridge freezer and a shower room/wc on the ground floor.
Upstairs are four big, airy bedrooms, to sleep 8-10 people + baby (free cot available), each with an en-suite bathroom. One has its own balcony. There are two fold up single beds which can be used for children/teenagers sharing a room. All the rooms are exceptionally spacious with traditional beamed ceilings and handmade cotto floors. Decoration is simple with clean white walls and pale grey paintwork on doors and shuttered windows. All windows have fly screens and there are room fans - although Laguscello's walls are so thick, that the rooms stay cool, even during the height of summer. White bed linen and towels are provided and there are plenty of books, toys and board games, plus wi-fi inside and out.
The original outdoor pizza oven is a great favourite with guests and can also be used for roasting meat as well as for experimenting with pizzas! Many guests find they love Laguscello's pool, garden and amenities so much, that they can barely tear themselves away to explore the many wonderful sights close by or a little further afield - including Rome and Florence, which can be enjoyed for day's out by train from nearby Orvieto station.
The Little House built in 1924 and attached to one end of the main farmhouse offers additional accommodation for up to four people for parties renting the main farmhouse only - please ask Jane & Peter for details if you might be interested in adding this to your booking. It works especially well if your party has several generations - as a bolthole for grandparents maybe - or several families.
The Little House has its own entrance through a covered terrace with table and chairs and with the front door opening directly into the pretty kitchen. Although simple it is fully equipped, including a washing machine and dishwasher, with a dining table in front of a wood burning stove. An archway leads through to the lounge with windows on two sides capturing the evening sunshine. Upstairs is a spacious main bedroom with king size bed and French doors leading onto the large terrace with breathtaking views on three sides. There is also a small twin bedded room, which also has its own door to the terrace. There is a shared bathroom with a large walk-in shower. All bedrooms at rooms at Laguscello have free-standing fans and every window has a flyscreen. The Little House can be rented in winter and has a wood burning stove, which also heats the water and radiators - logs are provided.
|Further details outdoors|
Centrepiece of the large garden is a 12m x 8m pool, with plenty of comfortable sun loungers and recliners. On the terrace is a roomy table for outdoor dining beside the original pizza/bread oven - which has been restored and can also be used for cooking meat - under the dappled shade of a pergola. Scented by massed lavendar and with its own herb garden there are also fruit trees for guests to supplement their meals with and a large, flat lawn for ball games. A second pergola provides a shady retreat - especially for after-lunch snoozing in the hammock! At the front is a large gravel area for secure parking and the property is securely fenced and gated. There are wonderful, uninterrupted views over farmland towards woods and the distant mountains beyond. A path passes Laguscello, the original Pilgrim's Way from Canterbury to Rome. It is used only by occasional farm workers and walkers, as it links Lake Bolsena to Orvieto through lovely countryside featuring vineyards, olive groves, kiwi orchards, woodlands and fields full of wild flowers. Within a few minute's walk is a wood containing Etruscan tombs - and mushrooms and orchids in season!
A map is provided at Laguscello for those wishing to walk the Pilgrim's Way down to Lake Bolsena, which takes an hour or so and can be rewarded by a fresh fish lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants on arrival. The medieval town of Bolsena is a special favourite with guests and has lovely restaurants (full details provided at the house), as well as children's playgrounds and beaches - cycles can be hired too.
Laguscello's farmhouse has four huge bedrooms with king size beds in three and a standard double bed in the fourth. There are also two fold up beds, ideal for children or teenagers sharing a room to use. This means that 8 + two children/teenagers can be accommodated. Prices quoted are for 8 people - a small additional charge of £75 per bed per week is made for use of the fold up beds or sofa bed to accommodate a further two people. There is also a free cot.
Attached to the farmhouse is the Little House, which can also be rented to provide additional accommodation for a further four people, in conjunction with the farmhouse. This is a perfect bolthole for grandparents, noisy teenagers, romantic couples or friends - so they have their own space to retreat to. Also perfect for a nanny. It may be rented for an additional charge only by those also renting the farmhouse - this ensures complete privacy at Laguscello. Parties of 10 or under are welcome to rent just the farmhouse. The Little House is also available to rent on its own during the winter and sleeps 4. It has a wood burning stove and logs are provided.
Prices include gas and electricity, bed linen and towels and once-weekly cleaning. Pool towels are also provided. Linen and towels are changed on Saturdays for those renting Laguscello for more than one week. Prices also include use of the private pool from 30 May to 26 September 2015.
The Umbria region
Umbria features high mountains and rolling hills and lakes. It has a typical Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and mild winters. The average temperature is 26c in summer with the sun shining all day.
The area around Laguscello is famed for its Etruscan history and the museums in the region are filled with their distinctive pottery and art reflecting the gentle nature of this sophisticated and peaceful ancient society. There are Etruscan tombs which you can visit in the woods beside Laguscello.
Laguscello is just a few kilometres from the border with Tuscany and so day trips to all of its famous must-sees are very achievable - the road to Siena is an especially wonderful route as it takes you through the famous and very beautiful Val D'Orcia. Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Sansepulcro, Todi, Arezzo and many more Tuscan 'must-sees' are all within a two hour drive.
Famous gardens like Villa Lante and Bomarzo are close by and there are plenty of vinyards and olive groves to visit for samplings! To the west, the Tuscan coast is around an hour and a half's drive and day trips to Rome and Florence by train are straightforward - with both under 1hour 30 from Orvieto station - a 15 minute drive from Laguscello and with free parking.
Nearby, Orvieto is not to be missed - take the funicular railway up to the top of the rock before seeing its famous cathedral, caves and charming narrow streets. Also nearby is the isolated medieval city of Civita di Bagnoregio, now so eroded that it can only be reached by a footbridge. Not for the fainthearted, a walk across the steep footbridge is rewarded with lovely medieval streets and architecture of houses clinging to this rocky outcrop and there are several good restaurants to try.
The medieval town of Bolsena standing on the lake - so large, it is like an inland sea - is a special favourite. Its pretty square has bars for aperitifs there are plenty of really good restaurants and evening strolls beside the lake are rewarded with spectacular sunsets. You can hire bikes at Bolsena to cycle around its shores and there are beaches to enjoy.
Laguscello is just a five minute drive from its nearest village, Castel Giorgio with everything you need from bakeries and a butcher to bars. You can pop in for fresh bread to take home for breakfast and sample stunning coffee at Bar Asterix - or combine shopping with an early evening aperitif, sitting on the bar's terrace (one gin and tonic will definitely be enough!). The large supermarkets in Orvieto Scalo are a 10 minute drive - take in stunning views of Orvieto on the drive down!
The house is reached from a 'B' road which leads to Castel Giorgio in one direction and to the main Orvieto to Viterbo road in the other. You follow a track from the road through a pretty wood before emerging into open countryside on the side. Laguscello is sited just here with commanding views across rolling countryside - the fields which surround the house on every side are planted with sunflowers in alternative summers - so it is surrounded by a spectacular sea of yellow in July and early August.
You may see the occasional walker or farm worker, but essentially Laguscello offers total peace and privacy, yet is just a few minutes away from the trappings of normal life!
It is a mere 15 minute's drive to the wonderful medieval city Orvieto standing on it's craggy rock. From here the A1 motorway and fast rail connections link directly to Rome - just over an hour to the south - and Florence a little further to the north. In between and around and all within easy reach are Siena, Assisi, Todi, Montepulciano, Sansepulcro, Pienza, Spoleto, Perugia...

"A wonderful experience that lived up to all expectations."
Laguscello is a perfect base for a get-away-from-it-all holiday. We were a party of 10 seeking walking, swimming and relaxation in the Umbrian countryside, and our extensive research which led us to this property proved spot on The isolated location was great with walks directly from the house. The swimming pool and table tennis were well used and the pizza oven was great fun (although the pizzas would have made an Italian weep!). All the bedrooms had en-suite and were HUGE so there was no need to squabble over who had the best room. Overall a great holiday experience which I would have no hesitation recommending to others seeking a similar vacation.

"Completely fantastic place to stay"
The accommodation is first class and is set in lovely countryside about 1 hour from the airport. The surrounding area has many interesting towns and excellent restaurants to visit or you can just relax away from it all at the very private location. I cannot recommend this enough – 10/10.
